kp/scarborough
« on: January 06, 2014, 05:47:27 AM »
I'd like to learn how to use a kp this year, a resolution I'm hoping will be easier to achieve than every other years one!
I'll start out for bass first and once I've got the hang of it move onto the salt water!
what size reel is a good one to start with - 4" or 5"?, and what diameter line and what sort of rod is recommended for this?
any recommended casting videos out there that might help, pretty clueless. :tkx:

I'd say get a 6" off the bat, load it with 25lb cheapish line in the beginning till you get the hang of it.

Lure weight plays a big role when casting a KP, I tend to go for heavier spoons above 1.5oz.

I do the backwards cast. Swinging it from left waist to right should. I't took me a while to master this.

Do yourself a favor and go buy the "fishing Natal" booklet at a tackle shop...It's about R30 and its has schematics in it and a lot of info on KP.

hi kevf

I did this a few years back and to this day i love my kp. when bassing for fun its my number one outfit. just love the 1 to 1 fight on this reel.

I have found that a rod has to have a fairly soft tip and that the butt has to be shorter than the standard length. i use an 4 inch kp reel, half loaded with 0.3mm line, sometimes i add 0.35mm lines (just about 30m). too thin lines will give you alot headaches when overwinds happen (they tend to snap easily when wrapped around the main shaft), and they will happen alot. on a competitive level the kp stays at home because she aint very accurate. there are a few casts that i use, to explain some of them is just as difficult as the cast itself :hehe: .

The back cast as described above is one of the easiest, just remember to release the pressure on the reel half way thru the cast and continue to follow thru until the rod aims to the intended area. another cast, nameless, is like using an tennis racket, swung 180 degrees, from behind you to in front of you. this cast is best used with some weight, as in texas rigs. the other cast, also no name to it, is commonly used one. i use it for pitching light and heavy lures to reeds, grass, trees, just about anywhere. can get up to 15 meters depending on the set up. i hold the rod in my right hand behind the reel, towards the butt section, thump on the spool, the reel handles are facing the ground, with the lure dangling a rods length out, i insert my index finger (left hand) inbetween line and reel (where the line straightens out from the reel), i swing the lure towards me and as soon it reaches to the reel i yank my left hand behind me. this makes the line peel off the spinning reel at the same time shooting the lure forward, the line drops towards the floor while the lure keeps pulling the line, then with the right hand thump i apply pressure to stop the lure on target. with a bit of practice there is no need to correct the line back onto the reel, just grab the reel and rod in one hand and feel for that bite.

It might sound alot to diggest but it is very easy if shown, but i will leave my number if you need any futher explanation 0833087778.

i dont know if they sell spares but my guess would be to contact kingfisher or basil manning in durban to steer you in the right direction,
as a last plan you could always make your own (out of wood would make your reel look awesome) or get a pal who has or knows someone with a lathe. i hate to see the kp out of action, i'll gladly help search in my area, tell me what size kp it is?

Hi Bass Bug

Thank you for the reply. It is a 4 inch KP. The trouble is that the base if the handles are tapered and almost every time I cast the lines finds it's way way there, fouling the cast. I've tried turning them over but then it does not turn. I'm going try finding someone with a lathe. The KP from the the shore gets you some strange looks in East London. Seems like a lot of of folks don't know these reels aren't just for boat fishing.

ok bud, i understand now. i'm no pro by no means but i try everytime to have a problem free day (still waiting for one of those days), for now i see no wrong with the handles but only they foul the line during the cast, this happens from time to time and gets better with experience. to minimise the problem i use line that is much stiffer line like maxima (dark green) and no less than 0.35mm (has you get better 0.3mm). try to slow the cast, if distance is needed add a heavier weight or longer rod. check the path (in slow motion) your reel travels from start to finish, maybe you twisting/jolting the rod, and handles should face downwards or earth when the rod has stopped.i also follow the line coming out with the rod tip.
i have a mate with spare handles, if you want them please forward me your address.

Hi Bassbug

It won't allow me to PM. Perhaps I'm doing it wrong.

Thank you for your effort and generosity. I will track the package.

Hi Bassbug

Thank you. I have received the package. I am delighted, already loaded up with .37 Maxima and will fish it next weekend. Unfortunately the wind yesterday was just too strong.  I got 25m with a 28g sinker.

Once again thank you.
