Anti-reverse - who uses the reverse function?
« on: December 29, 2013, 08:21:17 AM »
This may seem like a stupid question but I was wondering if anyone uses the "reverse" function on their reels?  :dunno:
I have never used it and I think it is just there to show people that you can get over-winds on a grinder (HP's one does not count on this thread  :lolo: ). A non-fishing friend came for a visit and I showed him my new grinder. It took exactly 8 seconds for him to disengage the anti-reverse and turn the handle backwards with horrifying results.  duh <:

I use it very often but not by choice. All those Jarvis Walkers and Sure Catch grinders only have anti reverse for the first trip  :-)

If you ever have your line get under the spool or wound tightly around places where it's not supposed to be, the ability to switch the anti-reverse off is a useful function. You can carefully pull the line free as you wind the reel backwards until that particular tangle is undone, then re-engage the thing and wind the line back onto the spool where it belongs. Without the ability to reel in reverse in that situation you're going to get out your scissors and start losing line - or expensive braid.

Tha is the only useful function I have found for the reverse function

Many guys believe that fighting a fish on the rewerse put you in direct feeling with the fish. Many guys in the fresh water bank angling do this. I think it is more aboute loosening the drag after every cast and remembering to tighten it before every cast. With dropshot you can set your drag and leave it as is. You are casting lures in a 1 to 2onze class. With fresh water depending on your sinker size you are casting between 70 to 120grams at a time. A average weight of a M1.5 with a ball of ground bait weigh in at 85gram. This is the only reson why the fresh water guys use it. When fighting a fish on rewerse you need to be very awake. Fighting a fish on the drag is mutch saver. The drag respond mutch quicker than any fisherman alive.

I use the anti reverse off when bank / bait fishing for barbel. Once I have cast in, picked up the slack and put the policeman on I switch off the anti reverse.

A barbel normally picks up your bait on the move, and will either just swim away with it, or drop it after a few metres, then pick it up again and swim away with it.

With the anti reverse off, there is absolutely no tension on the line during the initial pick up and run which is fairly slow and steady, with the reel in reverse. Once I am satisfied that the fish has indeed taken the bait, I engage the anti reverse, strike, and then fight it off the drag. w;k
If we caught fish on every trip, it would be called " Catching". We don't, and that's why it's called "Fishing".

With this type of fishing it makes sense.
