Jip I got a tip for you, as you enter Wolmaransstad drive slowly and look out for the Biltong den on your right hand side, they have some of the best biltong you can get and it's not an arm and a leg! It won't help with the fishing but it will make the dull moments between fish worth while!
Trouble is just fun you got caught having

I only know of the river beneath the dam wall(sleuces)...we caught huge barbel there a few years ago(8-16kg)mostly at night when the barbel go on the hunt...I noticed every evening that these little(carp I think it was)fish would hug the shallow water on the banks in their thousands and shortly afterwards these big barbel would hunt in schools of probably 30-50,I then took the scoopnet and scooped a few of these small fish and used them as livebait on a 7/0 hook(3/4 at a time)I'd then cast that 5-10m ahead of the school and wait for the line to go tight, then game on..I caught the biggest one of just over 16kg using this method...the keep net was too small for it so I filled the canoe with water and put the big barbel in there, nose to tail almost as long as the canoe.. :hehe: :lolo: :fshn: overall we must've caught 20 that way...no info on the dam itself but catching huge barbel when they are around is almost like sea fishing, don't even set the rod up on the rodholders(mikstokke)you can sit with rod in hand... :fshn: can't remember if we got carp that week-end,but not too bothered about that... :hnthnt: w;k we lived in these cottages on the banks and where you fish from is nice grass...so quite cumfy...braais on the bank too if I can remember correctly...those lighties will have a blast catching barbel... :hehe:

Kallie, the only advice I can give you is to give Suzette a call at Varswater Paradys in Vanderbijlpark. ( 016 933 2777 ). Tell her I referred you to her.

She fishes Bloemhof often in comps and has a wealth of knowledge of the area.

I know it's a bit out of your way, but a visit to her shop would really set you up for a good trip to Bloemhof. w;k
If we caught fish on every trip, it would be called " Catching". We don't, and that's why it's called "Fishing".

So I finally got around taking the lads fishing .  We left JHB at Dawns and took the long road to Bloemhof . The 3 hour journey felt like a breeze on a surprising pothole free highway. We arrived at just after 09:00 and Mom nearly had a Stroke  :hyst:  because of the condition of the Chalet . She was off to town to get buckets , Handy Andy and Mop while the Boys set up the rods .

We landed the 1st Carp within minutes in the 1kg range  :carp: and this would become the norm for the weekend and we could basically land these size Carps at will, I lost count late on the Friday arvie . We fished hard for the rest of the weekend and had some could quality family time . Catch of the weekend a nice Cat taken on a Grassie fillet  :fshn: .

Nice fish Craig. A bit late but next time don't be shy to put on bigger bait, a whole carp works wonders!!!
Reach for a bream!
