Disassemble sl50sh daiwa spool ratchet gear?
« on: August 07, 2013, 06:03:15 AM »
Very good day. I just signed up. I did my presentation at the Welcome forum.
I ask this question. Sorry  if my prayers are something consufas, I'm   from Buenos Aires Argentina,  my English is not the best, the translator   helps me a bit, but sometimes  I can not express how would you do in my   language. I'll try to make the best effort
Every  summer, between the months of November, December and January in Argentinas Atlantic coast, 400 km from the capital, they approach some    shark species, like the Bacota, scaladrun, brown cat. The  vast   majority of fishermen use large  peen senator reels 6/0 or 9/0 for  example,   loose lines about 500 meters with kayaks or jet skis and expect  the   fish takes the bait.
In my case I catch sharks in surfcastings mode. Launching with my rod   and reel as far as you can. It  is complicated because balancing a equipment   fight to resist sometimes a  shark can weigh 100 kg (may be heavier) and   also to let me get to the  distance of the channel where they are   eating (between 100 and 150 mt) is not easy. At first I started with   reels like the 7500 c3 ct mag with the 0.50 monofilament and bearings Formula abec9. I got very   good results, with some catches. But only small sharks, large forced me to   cut the nylon as they emptied the spool. So I'm working on a new fishing   equipment. This time used buy a used Daiwa sl50sh   with metal spool  in excellent condition.
My idea is to put a monomag of 13 mm in diameter. Nylon 0.50. but  with   the difference at 7000 abu, daiwa reel loaded with approximately  500   meters of 0.50, this will allow me to prolong the fight and collect  the   larger sharks.
The specific problem for which is annoying when I go to disarm the spool   to put the monomag, I can not disarm. I can not remove the centrigugal shaft and de ratchet gear. Do not   c-clip holds a standard, such as the series x-sha. I have some photos   for you to notice the problem that I have and can see what I mean.
Any comments, advice, instructional, video, will be very good Benvenido and grateful.
Thank you very much for reading.

I show a photo taken in 2011. It is a Dorado 14 kilos. Fish in the province of Corrientes in the river Parana  (1300 km from Buenos Aires). Almost reaching the border with Brazil. It is a very fighter fish, took me about 30 minutes to upload it to the boat. I use a 7000 abu Garcia c3 sweeden with berkley braid of 50 lb and heavy action rod shimano convergence 12-25 lb. An excellent animal.
Hope you like.
Thank you very much again.

Now that is a dream fish!
Thank you very much for the tutorial. I had read some time ago. I was a great help to make the first major maintenance to reel. But unfortunately it does not say anything about how to remove the ratchet gear and the spool shaft centrigal.
Thank you very much anyway. I is very helpful.

Hi Tomatero
As far as I'm aware, the Ratchet is fixed to the spool shaft, it cannot be removed.

I read with interest that you're targetting sharks with this reel? This reel, the Daiwa SL50SH was not really built to withstand the forces of shark fishing - it has Graphite frame and side plates, it will eventually break.
Much better reels to choose from the Daiwa range are the Saltist 50H and the Saltiga 50HK. These are full metal reels, frames and spools, and are built to withstand the forces.

If you're looking for distance casting reel, then get the Daiwa Grandwave 50 - it has a fully disengaging spool shaft and pinion for perfect casting - but it is also not a Shark reel, as it is also Graphite.

The way we fish for Sharks in South Africa is by "sliding" - cast a sinker out and slide big bait down the line. Check out this section:

Thank you very much for your answer. I understand that you can not remove. At least it looked like that. I was hoping that you could. It is not the most suitable reel but i found in an auction on ebay for very little money. This like I never have used it. already put carbonatex drags and a set of bearings brand ABEC7 formulated. Use the daiwa sealine long (sl20sh and sl30sh) and always be surprised that despite their strength graphite is great. The Saltist was one of my choices, but the problem is that it costs daiwa get much spare. I will try this reel this season to see what happens. Similarly, the vast majority of sharks I fish, rarely exceed 40 50 kilos. There are occasions in excess of 200, but in my case it never happened. To tell you something, a fishing buddy that was mine about a thousand yards in his truck with a fiberglass rod brand Sabre and reel brand escualo (national production reel spinning very strong and very capable of nylon) bag a shark of 2.10 meters. We totally were promptly with a metal reel is better, but regulating the star and with many meters of nylon's not impossible. The season begins in 3 months, I will test the results it gives me, but I'm thinking of a Saltist 50. But I ask you which do you recommend more for this activity if I left satisfied the SL50. Thank you for your clarification on my question. Concreto.Muchas were really thank you all for your good vibes.
Thank you very much and any advice is very welcome.

Incredible ténica. I'm shocked. Always haul bait but with the bait clip in the set. Always was losing very many meters and used a very small bait. Be so kind, to tell me a store where I can buy the "no return slide clip". It's really fantastic.
Thank you very much, you taught me something that really is not used in Argentina.
I have no words.
thanks

Best reels for Sliding are: Daiwa Saltiga, Shimano Trinidad, Penn Torque, Daiwa Saltist, Shimano Torium

Be careful about taking a cheaper reel and pimping it with Carbontex (increasing the Drag capacity etc)... the reel structure was not designed for the extra force, for example the Gears (Pinion and Drive gear) are not designed for the strong force, they are cheaper quality and something might break! Also, the SL50SH does not have a backup Anti-reverse bearing, which might become a problem with wear and tear on the Ratchet gear.
The SL50SH will handle a few Sharks in the 50kg range, but sooner or later, the reel mechanics will fail.

Thank you very much for your advice and for the tip of Lenny. I'm going to contact. On the subject of the reel. I'm looking at several options and no new toriums Saltist and really economical prices. I thought you were a lot more expensive reels. I think perhaps make the change for one of those. I will also put the SL50 monomag to daiwa and I'll have it as a backup or just to use it. Maybe not for him so demanding use. I appreciate a lot your advice. If you would have me to recommend a reel to load more than 300 meters of 0.50 and throw between 100 and 150 meters. What would?
 Thank you.

Our Dorado / Mahi Mahi  looks way diffrent.

Hi Lenny, these days I will contact you by private message to see if I can send some gear. The Mahi Mahi Fish is one of my dreams. It is true that they are very different, the Dorado is a river fish, come to weigh 30 kilos. It is a born hunter, stalks its prey between rocks and jumps like a torpedo when passing guard.
Someday I'll be fishing and hunting for their country, is a debt that I have with myself for many years.
Thank you very much for your comment.

 Thank you.

Any of the reels I mentioned above will take approx 300m of 0.50.
But you should do what we do in SA... load your reel with 500m of 50lb (0.3mm) Braid backing first, then put 150-200m of nylon 0.5 on top of that. Now you have 700m line capacity.

Thanks for your answer. I always wondered that because I never experience it. To make the braid serves surfcasting? just get away with the nylon? What happens when it gets wet and gets heavy?
thanks

Using braid as backing increases spool capacity dramatically... from 300m to 700m.
The braid is MUCH thinner than the nylon.
When you cast, you're casting the nylon, not the braid. Underneath the nylon is the braid.
When you replace your nylon, you only change 150-200m each time, instead of a whole spool of 600m. The braid stays on the spool for 3 or 4 years.
Thin diameter braid is much thinner than the nylon, it doesn't get "heavy".

Guys help me here... anyone speak Argentinian?  :hehe:

I understood perfectly. Thank you very much for your answer. Just today I will buy braid and I will do the test. Thank you so much for your answer. you are opening a new way in this discipline fishing.
Thank you very much.

Excellent! You much cleverer than me!  :hehe:

Gabriel, if you have further questions, please don't hesitate to ask. We will try help you if we can.

Just understand that what you are getting yourself into, is a complex form of angling, but if you get it right can be very rewarding.

Be very sure with your connections/knots for joining Braid to nylon. Also, be careful of what quality braid you get. Good brAid is not cheap. Cheap braid will end up in disappointment. Everything you need is on that Sliding post link I gave you. Make sure you read that and understand well. Any questions, fire away! Good luck!
