My 1st flies
«
on:
June 28, 2013, 06:51:00 PM »
So after finally getting myself a vice and some material, i sat down and tied my 1st few flies.
I spent hours on youtube and picked Rory's brain and these are the result...
My version of a PTN Hotspot
Partridge tail
Peacock hurl abdomen and flashback with a red wire rib
Green dubbing and a brass bead
also did a smaller one without the bead
Mistakes....
I should have tied this further back and used a bit more flashback..
Next up, I tried a walkers-killer
Hackle fibres for a tail, read wrapping and partridge feathers
Then it was just a test off different techniques.....
Marabou tail with flash, chenille body, red eyes and a dubbed thorax....
And here they are....
Advice and critique welcome !

I hope you land some nice fish one those - The feeling that you get landing your first fish on a fly that that you tied... just report back on what you landed please

great stuff homes!!
Tying becomes addictive.
If i can suggest one thing, before you fish these flies, just check that they dont spin when being retrieved. the last thing you want is a spinning fly. We normally check this in the pool.
Just my 2c, maybe you know this already!
Great flies for a first attempt, way better than my first flies looked!!

Looks like the DIY bug bit you properly Homie.
Don't much about flies but the colours look appetising.
Thanks for sharing and well done.

Looking GR8 Homes and that nogal for the first flies!!!
I never got "walkers-killer" right. Remember to put some nail varnish on the heads where you tie the flies off, that way they will last much much longer, just don't get in trouble with the wife, or you could look silly for a couple of moments in Edgars with some stares from old people and go buy yourself a bottle of your own
My first trout I caught was on a fly I tied myself and was the "black and peacock spider" weighed 600g, but it was a great feeling.
I ended up with tying bass flies in their hundreds and just before my vice became a device to hang painted hard baits from I tied a couple of saltwater flies with dumbell eyes.
What was said about the addicitveness is no lie, it really is VERY addictive.
PS. MIAS in fourways has the largest range of fly tying materials that I have come accross.
