Is "Jig and Drop" now illegal?
« on: April 15, 2013, 05:14:32 PM »

Please see "new" regulations below on Ezemvelo website

http://www.kznwildlife.com/index.php/linefish-new-recreation-fishing-regulation.html

with particular note to regulation 6:

"No person shall engage in fishing, except for octopus, cuttlefish or squid, by the jerking of a hook or jig in the sea (jigging), with the intention of impaling the fish thereon."

Does this mean that "jig and drop" during the sardine run is banned as a live sardine can no longer be impaled anymore?
A fish in the water is worth more than two in the hand.

The Jig and drop rule has always been there Khaliq. It's nothing new. And yes, technically it's illegal to use in the Sardine run... always has been. We had this same discussion on a forum about 6 years ago. Having said that, it would be very difficult, if not impossible to enforce this rule during a Sardine run smash though... don't know anyone who has ever been prosecuted for it.

Jig and drop has always been illegal. Its not really enforced though some people will say to add a small skirt as you are now "lure fishing". To be honest I dont think adding that skirt will stop you being fined if they decide to enforce

Thanks for the clarification guys. I was unaware of the regulations was taken in by the "new".  :uarocks

Slightly off topic I notice that regulations for cast nets only prohibit use from sunset to sunrise ie apart from the catch restrictions. I was aware that cast netting is  permitted in "open sea" only.  The expression "open sea" I got from Ezemvelo a good few years ago when I purchased my first cast net licence from their offices.

I have also searched the recreational regulations on the DAFF website and only come across the time prohibition and species restriction. Does this mean that  "open sea" does not apply any more and one can use a cast net in the river as long as you take the permitted species and quantities eg a maximum of 50 mullet?

In the old days you had to choose 2 rivers to use the Castnet in when you bought it. These were then written on the license. This doesn't happen anymore and the rules are dependant on the authorities in the specific area.
Eg: You can't use a Cast net in the Umfolozi at Mapelane or at St Lucia.
You need to find out from the ParksBoard offices in your area, which rivers allow it.
