Wavecrest, Transkei Advice needed
« on: March 05, 2013, 10:33:11 AM »
Hi there
I am going down to Wavecrest from 1 - 7 April. Can anyone give me a heads up on tactics and species as well as what bait I need to take and what is available there to buy? I am driving from Cape Town but have a freezer in my hilux so can buy down here if need be.
Thanks
JimmyB

:welc: Wavecrest has very basic supplies, a small shop with cold drinks snacks etc, no bait, but there are plenty of mud prawn there. Its a beautiful spot! The estuaries are full up with juvenile Kingies and Grunter, also Snapper and Perch.

There is a very nice surf zone to the left of the mouth, lots of holes and sand banks... If you want to fish R&S, walk right along the beach, the spot on the right of the mouth has lots of Blacktail, Karanteen, Stumpies and Brusher... But there is about 4-5kms of superb water that I never fished but it looks amazing if you walk right. No fishing pressure and I can see many Cracker and Bronze Bream hanging around there.

They have canoes available there, use them in the estuary, at the split, there is a small channel to the right, it becomes very shallow at low tide, dont fish there at low, you will get destroyed by mud crabs, stick to the main channel to the left at low and then fish the right tributary at high, saw plenty of kingie smashes, and lots of Snapper. Plenty mullet on low tide though so use a throw net there if you need livies, also a throw net right infront of the Wavecrest restaurant will produce karanteen...

No problem, something I didnt try there is artificial, I am sure you will get some awesome fish if you use small surface lures and hard plastics... The estuary system there is really in superb condition... Well it was in 2008, I am sure not much has changed...

Wow, enjoy your trip, have never been there, but that sounds like the place to go! I'm a big believer of live mullets.
Go fish!

The rocks on the Western side  , the 'big pebble rocks'  is a good place for Crakers and Kob , and its an easy place to fish , tjokka will be my first bait on that spot , its a foul area , so take enough lead .

be sure to take care on the roads , watch out for goats , potholes , sheep , cattle ect

What will you be fishiingfor Edibles or Sharks ? The river is very nice too .

We will wait for the pics of your PB's .

Hi Jimmy

Have fished the Wavecrest area for many years.  Found the Block at the river mouth to be very productive. This time
of the year the Garrick and Kob are active. Try the plug for garrick and an S-bend spoon for kob. Mullet works very well.
Pignose grunter are also caught from the block, mainly on mudprawn which is freely available. To the North is a half an
hour trek onfoot. The first set of rocks are called Boulders, damba, galjoen, pignose and brusher. 50 Meters on is the Boiler, old wreck good for pan fish, Next is a small bay called the vlei, lots of kelp, pan fish, The next is the POINT, good for brusher, kob,big elf, black steenbras and pan fish. Plenty rockbait, siffies and catfish available, GOOD AT LOW TIDE.
100 meters north is a small set of rocks called little Fouries rock, good for all types of eds. 50 meters on is Fouriesrock proper. good for brusher. Use   a siffie for bait. A little further on are two high rocks called PULPIT, kob, pignose, elf,
all other pan fish. Now back to the hotel with a load of fish.
To the right of the river mouth is a small bay called BLUEFISH HOLE, damb, galjoen,
A lot of beautiful fishing spots to the South, look in the pub for a sketch of all the spots, too many . The river South of
Wavecrest is Kobenyaba,  plenty kob and BIG ineds.
Hope this will help you to catch a few fish. Good luck an enjoy your holiday. Wish i could join u.

Hi Beno

As far as I know the use of siffies for bait has been banned. :dunno:
