First and foremost a belated intro to UA, I have been lurking for some time and even replied to a few posts, so this is a bit ass about face - apologies. I always look forward to the unselfish info, wisdom and humor shared by the UA members.

 I have fished for many species from  :carp: , :krpr: , :tgr: , :trout: , :cout: , :gt: , :grk: , :yft: :shd: , :blktl: , :shrk: , :pylie: oh and bass with bait, on fly and lure, with varying success over the years, and Ill try anything that might give me that indescribable excitement of the tug and take at the end of a fishing line. Its so bad that if I were locked away in solitary I would fish for larvae in the puddles I make with my own water supply.

That being said, I must also make a confession, with the fishing especially offshore being so poorly of late (some might use stronger Afrikaans), I find myself drawn towards the tackle shops as some form of relief to the depression or itch. I have also had to come to the realization that  I suffer from a severe and chronic condition called TA (tackle addiction). Unfortunately I dont think Im alone, I see and hear of many with the same symptoms. Over the past 30 odd years of trolling tackle store isles, Ive come up with a few coping mechanisms that dilute or partially offset this addiction, but unfortunately I have found no cure ....or maybe I dont want to...  :hnthnt:


The following are rules I try and stick to when the tackle store starts to play its lustful tune,

1- Dont go to the tackle store!

2- If its too late for#1, then DONT grab a basket.

3- If you miss #1 & 2, at least take the small basket.

4- Head straight for the sinker section and buy some sinkers, the more money you think youve got the more sinkers you buy. This will have the effect of weighing down your basket (or hands if you remembered #2), and has the added psychological benefit of making you think the basket is full.

5- Leave now!

6- You cant leave can you!  Find the bargain bucket, you might find what your looking for at a discount....or just a bargain in all the colours that dont work.....

7- Avoid at all costs the rod and reel combo special section - you will end up with a rod and/or reel that wasnt on special.

8- Now go to the swivel and hook isle, you will always lose some of those, this should keep you busy at a low cost to your credit facility.

9- If you now find yourself looking at Rapala, Halco, Mann ,Norman, Yazuri (which you promised yourself you wouldnt ) think of all the funky colours you have and never use that just sit in your tackle box..... then turn it around and look at the price (try not to swear too loudly)

10- At this stage you are terminal, take yourself over to the womens clothing section IMMEDIATELY! You  know you wont buy anything there (this doesnt work if you are a woman!). Here you should start feeling uncomfortable and jittery, the strange glances dont help - make a dash for the till.

I hope there are a few tricks I havent thought of that someone out there knows, anyway I do always appreciate the talking to I give myself in the car when I leave :blush: .

 :welc: .. Chigger , great intro  :appr:  , tried steps 1 to 10.. some work some dont ... :hyst:  ... and the worst is the inland guys are even more  :craz:  when it come to the dreaded TA , I think some of us could actually re-stock local tackle shops up here when there stocks run low....  :rotfl

good advice there!


My strategy is to check what I have before I go to the tackle store and know exactly what I want....however this DOES NOT always work - I still buy way too much.....


In my fishing store room (my wife calls it the "tackle shop annex") there is stuff I have never used and most probably wont use.


I get rid of stuff when I go fishing where there are gillies- and assemble a bag full of goodies for them - which includes old rods and reels


Since using braid, I must admit that I no longer have extra line piling up - and since I now mainly do lure fishing, I dont buy sinkers.


Dont talk to me about flies - I have at least 500.....


However, I still manage to spend a fortune before any big expedition - and com back with tons of unused stuff


I am thinking of therapy...

Let's not get on to tackle collections! A year ago I had money in my bank account and no lures but thanks to this forum I now have many pretty plastic fish but no money :blush:

Lockable , storage from your Missus is a MUST , you should have a small area to keep warrantees , slips ect , Diagrams [Best is to keep all the boxes IMO ] This is hard evidance , in Most cases she is gonna want something in return. :hehe:

Another Rookie mistake is to visit more than one shop on a day , find out what you need , go in , PAY , have a chat AFTER you have paid ... make your way to your car ASAP  w;k

Thanks guys, Ja I got it bad, Im only 2 days "dry". Ive converted the "servants quarters" into a shrine for all my fishing and hunting necessities its like a mini Basspro or Cabela's. Its the only room the dogs are allowed, and the kids are not - "because the dogs dont move my precious :unhap !!"

I bought a bakkie to help with the fish...but it no good, once the tackle is in there, there is no space for the fish!!!!

had to buy the wife a new car to shut her up... that felt bad, so went tackle shopping to get over the shock... retail therapy!

Its a terrible problem. I try keep away from tackle shops and manufacturers and send a friend or family member with an empty sample packet or I phone through an order and get them to collect. Other wise my bank account get serious withdrawl symptoms and its is a very serious matter, especially when you use the grocery money and end up eating green bread toasted to make the rest of the month.

I have the same problem with Kings. It's so beautiful I can't help myself, have to shop!! Converted one side of garage to fishing tackle, the only problem is I realise I don't have enough(to fill the garage).

You still lucky then.
 
Last year I sold about 80 rods and reels and after it was all gone it did not look like anything was missing.....
