Allsorts, I'm always keen to learn. Have been surfing the net and found good info under Light Rock Fishing....also use micro soft lures and jigs. Please share. Have been testing jig fly ideas that I make.

What jig fly ideas have worked for you? Prefer catching micro's on a fly setup  :-)

I mainly use bait for my micro's, but I also use curly tails and pieces of berkley maggot...

That snoek in #152 looks like a seapike/pickhandle??

I know it has an almost uncanny resemblance to a pickhandle but deffo a snoek.

Let me say that I've been amazed how well the micro-jigging approach has worked - I've done a lot of fishing with SPs ( starting in 1990 in Durban harbour) and SW fly fishing but I think the MJs are at least as good, if not better than fly and SPs.  Heaps of potential, especially once you mix jigs and small SPs together.  I fantasize about being on a boat in Durban harbour near the Coal Terminal at dawn in mid-summer....

Walkerskiller, I see you do lots of fly fishing for yellows....same idea, just use bucktail or jig with soft plastic for weight and lighter streamer fly on dropper...American striper fishermen do it using the bucktail or spoon with a teaser fly or soft plastic minnow on a dropper. Jigflies as I use are just flies tied aroung very small jig heads. Surf float and fly for further ideas.

Walkerskiller here is a combo I use......self tied micro jig (balloon strip for tail) and twinflex fly (strip and cut to shape).

The shrimp is on a #14 mustard bait-holder.Simple and easy to tie, costs nothing and catches from glassies and tigers up.

Yo that shrimp is a killer - we need what the fly boys call an SBS - step-by-step please.  I'll post up on this later but combining a jigging spoon with 1 or more micro lures (like this shrimp) works very well as you get very good casting distance and an attractive action.  I wonder what could be caught fishing micro-jigging spoon and 1 or 2 micro lures in the surf behind the shore break or in the channels you get at Winkelspruit for example.

It is what I use for wave garrick and have caught 'whiting' or bananna fish in the surf. Any surf from Toti to Winkel.

Excellent - whiting is a great catch.  I know they get them in Oz on small topwaters and my mate got one on SP (I think) in a Zululand estuary.  I remember back in the 80's we stayed in Winkel and as the waves lifted over the rocks you could see lots of stone bream, blacktails etc.  These days you don't see much in the waves anymore...

I'm working on a new to South Africa product which would allow you to fish those tiny shrimps at 30-40m over shallow rocks without snagging up - does that sound interesting....?

All in good time - need to maintain competitive edge till we are ready.  Can be used just as well for flies, smalls SPs, small baits.  What about redbait on the drift at 40m?

Resorted at times to using eye-drop bottles critically balanced with sand and water to get the depth you want and then let it drift in the wash. They cast  far too. Other than using the bottom jig, I use running sinkers with trace wire through and 'pinched' at the top just like they use for bass, just helluva cheaper.
