Decided to go 'basic', made my own tanago style hooks from piano/trace wire and use 'thread' for line. The first photo is of the hook I made and the next two of fish  I caught this afternoon. The hardest thing for the hook was getting a point on....chucked the wire in a Dremel and used a diamond file to get the point, thereafter bent it to shape and used pliers to shape the 'spade'. Worked like a bomb. Caught 11 fish, but it seems the small gape and lack of a barb does not hold onto larger fish.

Hi There,

I've got small shipment of tanago hooks landing from Japan this week.

Give me a shout if you want to order some at R60 per packet with 21 hooks. (see pic attached)

Cheers
Werner

My next plan is to modify some fly hooks...thanks for the offer, but this has reached another level now for me. I did this when I was a student and used to micro fish at Mpenjati estuary. Although then there was no title for this type of fishing. My son is now on my case, as he feels if it is not bought, it cannot work...mission accepted.

Species challenge with my son. Some fish today....maned blenny, stone bream, blacktail, spot damsel. Great fun....took photos in an acrylic container with polystirene as backing with salt water to see fins.

De Mond mini-leerie (or is that leerietjie?) followed by a Hottie off Kalk Bay harbour wall on a tiny Yamashita soft plastic rigged above a micro-jig.

Moonie on topwater and a pretty small oxeye tarpon - both caught in a blind lagoon near SAPREF.

Snoek off Kalk Bay harbour on micro jig.  Can't remember name of second fish - they usually show up off Kalk Bay when the water is cold after a North blow - caught on Japanese soft plastic designed for Aji (maasbanker)

Allsorts, where are you getting your micro jigs from?. Was in Kings,Basil Manning and Tackle Warehouse yesterday, drove the missus mad trying to get some. Caught most of the species on a bread fly sweetened withYum. Berkly sandworm worked for the rest. Are you importing?.

I am - Shimreels on eBay are good, I also order from another shop in Japan - Umiduri.jp.  I do have a few Tackle House Nabura Detectives 9g I might be able to spare from my private stocks - it's the jig in the hottie picture.

The only one I'm aware of locally is the Ripple Ash 7g - IFish import them.  I klapped the maasbanker one day at Kalk Bay on them and the Sabikis weren't working - the Ripple Ashes at the nearest tackleshop were sold out the next day.

If there is interest I can do a seperate post series on what I've learned over the last year about micro-jigging (1.5-9g class).  I've got some ideas on rods, lines etc.
