I caught this perfect little Catface Rockod this morning at Zinkwazi. Even this small it is an exact copy of its parents. Absolutely beautiful.

A couple of micros that I caught during my lunch break last week Friday. Got 3 micros in 20 minutes ... not too bad for the polluted mess that is Zoo Lake.
Started off with a mosquitofish.
Then quickly caught 2 dwarf kurpers.
and
Used miniature chunks of Berkley Powerbait Micro Wigglers as lure on tanago hooks.
Cheers

Got them in my own dam 100m from my house (oh, the advantages of living on a farm). I used a 2 wt with a floating line and 8x tippet. Its easy if you see the fish but that gets boring so I cast into spots where I think a shoal will be holding and let the fly sink for about 5 seconds before starting a slow figure or eight retrieve. The most effective is an even retrieve not because the fish prefer it but because its the only way to detect 75% of the takes you get. You can barely feel the weight on the line when the fish is hooked and striking is out of the question. If you strip strike the hook often rips out. What you do is when you notice the line is slightly heavier or your leader starts to sink slightly faster is you twitch which is enough to set the hook. Its then a case of putting your rod tip in the water and stripping in smoothly to avoid ripping the hook out.

Yep. I have even caught them that size on #16s. The ideal is #20 - 30. Just played with #24 grip dry fly hooks and they are nicer to use than the #30s. The gape is about the same but they come standard as barbless and the shank is a bit longer.

Nice micro bluegills.
Does anyone know of a place near Port Shepstone/South Coast where one can catch some bluegill? Going that way in December/
This is the smallest bass I've ever caught on lure.
Got it 2 weekends back on a tanago hook and small piece of powerbait.
The take was exhilarating and the fight pretty awesome ...
Cheers

I eventually became fed up after 3.5 weeks not wetting a line. Thats a record in summer with me and I was showing all the signs of chronic piscatorial withdrawal syndrome: Mumbled gibberish, panic attacks, emotional swings and dribbling into my lap. Clearly something had to be done so seeing as I am in Grahamstown with no transport i took my bike and a fly rod and spinning rod to the muddy dam below the monument just as you turn off the N2 just above the botanical gardens. Not sure how safe I was there but whatever. Unfortunately my report has to end up in the micro forum as that is all I found in that dam but hey, better than nothing.

Decided to go 'basic', made my own tanago style hooks from piano/trace wire and use 'thread' for line. The first photo is of the hook I made and the next two of fish I caught this afternoon. The hardest thing for the hook was getting a point on....chucked the wire in a Dremel and used a diamond file to get the point, thereafter bent it to shape and used pliers to shape the 'spade'. Worked like a bomb. Caught 11 fish, but it seems the small gape and lack of a barb does not hold onto larger fish.
