Greg when the bigger "micros" eat the smaller hooks they often do eat it deep down and this is a tough one, squash the barbs and gently pull the hook out with forceps, if its in the gills leave the hook there and hope for the best. Believe it or not I found some size 16 hooks that almost resemble circles, going to try those out and see if I can hook micros in the corner of the lip  :lolo:

I have enjoy this type of fish, and I often do it and have great fun especially of the rocks with the kids and as my crew will attest, often by accident off the boat as well.  :rotfl

I do however have a concern and that is small hooks do big damage to small fish as they often end up swollowing the hook which leads to gill damage.

How can I best avoid this while indulging in this activity and is it an environmentally sound practice?

I have started to use the smallest circle hooks I can find when I take my boy to fish. It works brilliantly.     So far I’ve caught small cracker, mullets, karrantene, blue  eyed jan bruin to name a few.

That's really cool Poenskop do you have a photo of how small these circles are. Would be cool to see one next to a matchbox so we can see how small they are. :shk

I think this is the way to go, because small fish usual hit very aggressively and move away, a perfect recipie for a circle corner of the mouth hook  :-)

When using small circles on the smaller species, I've noticed that most of my hookups are in the bottom jaw.

Think this happens when the fishie struggles to lift the sinker?
