Microfishing Setup
« on: November 23, 2012, 07:34:14 AM »
Hi guys, after Ziggy posted the Microfishing threads yesterday, it got me thinking, I really want to get into this. As many of you know I am mainly a light tackle angler and I really enjoy targeting different species, and size of fish has never really bothered me, especially when it comes to saltwater.

Now I am not going to get a specialist microfishing setup, what I would like to do is get a super super light setup, so would like to get your opinions on what setup to get. I heard FA mention he has a 5 foot berkley setup?

Ideally what I would like is a small grinder, very light braid and a rod between 4 and 5 feet in length, any opinions?

WK,I have the Shimano Clarus 5.6 ultra light rod.Paired with a shimano sedona 500 it makes for a lovely set up.I have put 6 pound braid on mine.Landed two big eye kingies on the set up at Kosi about two years back.Fish was only around 500 grams in weight, but was great fun on that set up.

I am going to head off to the tackle shop this afternoon to see what they have. I think this would be a great way to get my son more involved in fishing.
When I got married we did dot have a TV and my wife and I spent countless evenings catching small Blacktail etc off the jetty at the river in Still Bay. Man, those were the days!!

I agree. At least I know the chances of blanking will be small. I am tired of living in Blankville.

Hey there Walkers Killer, Lexus used to make a rod called a Lexus Zero. All the specimen guys used to use them (and I'm sure they still do). Pair this up with the smallest grinder you can find and you'll have the perfect setup for tiny fish. Look at some of the Artlure websites for more info.

What about a light fly rod with a small grinder?

Have toyed with the fly rod idea and its a bit pricey if something goes wrong...

I am going to check out the secondhand shops as well. Sometimes you get what you are looking for in these places. Just be careful that you don't buy stolen goods.

@fishy1969 - that is exactly why I like the fly rods, they are a bit longer and you can use it like a dip stick.

HI WK

I have seen micro rods at a few fishing stores recently, they are about 30cm long, will do some research in the coming days and post some pics...

In the mean time this one looks cool...

What about those el cheapo toy-like rods/reels from the supermarkets?! It's not likely that those 100 g monsters will break the rods... and it's dead cheap... if you loose/break it... no worries!!!!

Thanks Wynand, but I dont want the micro setups, want a 4/5 foot rod with like a size 200-500 grinder. Marcos thats not a bad idea, but those rods are not very sensitive?
