Transom-mounted Transducer vs Thru Hull mounted Transducer

After a chat with Aquafan, i realised i hadnt considered how to mount the transducers on my new boat which will begin getting built this week. If i'm going the thru-hull route i need to advice Tomcat asap for obvious reasons....

I'm fitting a Lowrance HDS 9M Touch and HDS 7 Touch with LSS 2 and Airmar P66 transducers respectively. What are the pros and cons of the 2 methods of fitment?

I cant really tell you the pros and cons, but from my experience I started to get a far better reading offshore once I went thru hull, there was a lot of cavitation on the external unit and when the sea picked up it was almost impossible to get a good reading.
I have the Airmar M260 in hull and think its magic, I am running a seperate speed and temp sensor inside my tunnel so there is no danger of knocking them off when beaching and trailoring. This was the other thing that annoyed me about the external bracket, once you beach and it kicked up, you had to remember to push it back down after you launch the next time.

I presume you have a thru hull as opposed to a in hull transducer.
Do you have picture showing what it looks like on the outside of the hull .
Can you get a reading at speed as some other people seem to have problems.

Got to the same conclusion, IN-HULL starting at 1Kw transducer and the "new digital" sounders, can "sound" while trolling at any trolling speed and even when crusing at moderate speed.

The external units used to work fine when moving slowly but at the higher trolling or at crusing speeds I would become "bottom blind"

Through hull is by far the best without a doubt, but I would take an in hull any day before a transom mount due to cavitation.
Through hull may be a problem for surf launching depending on your boat hull and where you mount it, so generally the in hull is then the better option.
