Improved Figure 8 Knot Tip

Improved Figure 8 Knot Tip:

So I learnt this neat little trick from a mate the other day, thought I would share it with you guys. I use it now on all my hook connections, especially in lighter mono. For reference on the normal Figure 8 check out Reefman's excellent tutorial in the knots section.

Step 1:
Take your preferred hook and mono (this is a 5/0 Daiichi and 20lb mono)

Thread the mono through the eye as you would start a normal Figure 8 knot

Step 2:

Now make your loops as per normal, but in this case make 4 taking care to hold them tightly with your thumb

Next swap hands to pinch the loops and give you access to the hook eye. Thread the tag end back up through the hook eye

Step 3:

Now swap hands back and pass the tag end round the back of the loops and pull through as per the normal Figure 8.

Gentle tension the tag and mainline to form the Figure 8 shape.

Step 4:

Lastly lubricate and tension the knot to seat. Trim off the tag end neatly. Now you have a double loop around the eye - extra protection! Nice and strong...

Great idea but I struggle with big hands and small knots.
Would passing the  sry line through the eye twice before making the figure 8 not have the same effect ?

I don't think it will work, as the tag end passes through the eye of the hook AFTER the loops have been made and then round the back. If you do it first I don't think it will pull the knot into the Figure 8 shape when you stretch it out. Only one way to find out - we must test it!

Good idea and nice tutorial!  This will be especially helpful for lighter hook-snoots.  :+ cred:
