MODIFIED YUTACAN KNOT ???
« on: September 24, 2012, 02:37:33 PM »
Hi Guys , Just seen a variation of the yutacan for tying mono to thicker leader.
The thinner double is wrapped 5 times aroung the thicker leader clockwise as in the normal yutacan.
But instead of passing the thicker leader through the loop in the double, the leader is wrapped round the double( in the
direction of the loop) anticlockwise  3 times before passing through the loop as in yutacan.
This apparently came from an overseas knot video. Does anyone know this knot or have any info on it ? Does it have any
advantage on the standard yutacan?
Regards Paddy

It's called the Tony Jones leader knot. Designed by Tony Jones, skipper of Ra Charters in the UK (or somewhere around there). As to it's usefuleness over the ordinary Yucatan, I can't really comment, since I haven't ever used it. My experience with the Yucatan type knot is it's great for lighter tackle, up to 0.5mm leaders, but after that it becomes quite bulky and difficult to tie without burning the mono. The other limiting factor about the knot is that it's tag end needs to be left quite long, and it ends perpendicular to the mainline, (see pic below) which is not ideal if the knot is going through your guides. If left outside the guides, it's a great knot.

Here's the thread with the video of the Tony Jones knot... http://www.ultimateangling.co.za/index.php?topic=7203.msg104747#msg104747
