Check out Tyrells trip report, he got the combination right, not sure what his budget was but definitely worth a look.

hi

i went to the northern tip of zanzibar for 10 days fishing and scuba diving with my wife, an absolute waste of time, inshore is gutted, the locals put their nets out every morning, at low tide they kill anything that has been stuck in the rock or small tidal pools. deepsea charters are a load of hot air, cost abt $400 for half a day, u will hear all the stories about the fishing and once on the water the reality is a big zero, pulling lures through non productive water.  as for swimming, the water temp is perfect, however you cannot walk bare foot as the waters edge is full of broken coral and sea urchins by the 1000's.

i booked a charter to catch sailfish on a flyrod, bought all the equipment needed, was assured by the skipper that he had caught plenty of fish on a fly rod, and that he had the perfect boat, he even sent me pics. well the baot was in for repairs on the main land, the bathtub provided  had 2 outriggers that where in the way and the skipper ( a south african) acknowledged after a while that this was the first time he had a client with a fly rod on his boat.

as for scuba diving, the coral is dying, not much fish to see as the locals eat anything bigger than a pinky. saw lots of crab cages and nets stuck on the reefs.

the cost in relation to mauritius is the same.

Sorry to hear of your bad experience Grumpy - I fish Zanzibar often out of Nungwe with Gerry and have always had good fish - plenty sails and to date my PB dorado and wahoo have come from there.
But it is not cheap.
Also like most of Africa, inshore fishing is depleted.
You need to go off the beaten track to get decent fishing, and with that comes more remote, and less stylish lodging. In short, ZNZ and the more popular places in Moz are out.
To the OP, I know of a special deal at Hemingways you may be interested in. More expensive than what you want but all in for 7 days, incl 4 days on a big boat and flights for 2 at 40K. And that is at one of the top resorts in Africa.

hi there

i also stayed at rus nungwe(spelling) i also booked with Gerry and another. the emails about what they where catching had me counting the days to get there. i then got told its the wrong time for Gt's, the season is wrong for sail fish, etc etc.  in a nutshell the marketing from the charter companies is fantastic,

Save yourself the hassle and take your missus to Thonga Beach lodge on Northern KZN coast... 5 star secluded and exclusive little resort. Spa. Outstanding food. Incredible service. Spectacular Scuba. Good fishing on your doorstep (Rocktail Bay area). No hassles with visa's, travelling etc. Just bliss.

Indigo and Duarte are at USD3K pp for the 5 night package, excl flights.
Stunning trip though - and one of the best skippers along the coast.

Good advice Reefs. It is easy to forget that more people come to SA on holiday, than locals leave. We truly are blessed with some of our locations.

Reefman for Thonga for fishing to get to Rocktail Bay, how would i get there? Would it be easy to organise?  Good GT's? ARe there any affordable charter boats around that area. I would like to target fish on plug essentially my preferred fishing method. Looks like an awesome place!

Nah the only charters are the resident Scuba operation. This is a remote part of the coastline, pristine and unspoilt. Fishing is Rock and Surf, lots of excellent spinning potential. A place where you will have miles of beach all to yourself! This is GT country!
To get there, you would need at least a 2x4... soft sand roads.

If that is the lodge next to Mabibi, its the place to be. Scenic, private, quiet. Fishing and diving exceptional.

Yup. Same one.

The order of bays coming down from Kosi... Black Rock--- Rocktail Bay---Lala Nek--- Island Rock---- Thonga---- Mabibi----- Sodwana

If you have a 4x4, then it's about a 1.5-2hrs drive down to Sodwana, where there are many charters to hook you up with.

Thanks Reefs . 4x4 hire is very expensive, never knew this expsensive! and driving up from CT is not an option as i have limited leave. Hard to make a call for me because could also do a SE Asia trip for almost the same price...total different experience again......decisions decisions

SE Asia is fantastic! spent a month there with my wife 2 years ago - very cheap and friendly, good food, lots of history etc...went to Vietnam, Cambodia and Malaysia....all we booked was the flight to Hanoi and back from Kuala Lumpur - and the first night in Hanoi. After that, we just went where ever we felt... accommodation is VERY cheap, service excellent.....the cheapes was a very comfortable hotel at Angkor Wat in Cambodia ( very comfortable and clean with aircon TV etc) for $8 for the two of us! Most expensive was hotel n Lankawi (Malaysia) at R150 per person per night in a fancy hotel.

However! Fishing was not on the cards,,,I tried to fish in Malaysia and went out on a boat( $200), bit only very tiny fish evident!

Make the Missus happy and do SE Asia and reserve the fishing for your mates where you can go to good spots and live roughly and cheaply. Taking her to SE Asia will certainly give you all the brownie points you would ever need to go fishing with the boys!
