Penn 555 Maintenance/service tutorial

How to service a Penn 555 Multiplier reel... Photographic tutorial.

Clean off the frame and body of the reel with a Toothbrush dipped in Benzine. Rinse with hot soapy water and allow to dry.

Once dried, coat the entire frame with a light coat of grease, this will help prevent corrosion.

Many parts of this reel were badly corroded. After a benzine soak, parts were dried, sprayed with a rust buster like WD40, and allowed to penetrate for 15 minutes or so. Remaining spots of rust/corrosion were either sanded down with fine grit (800-1600) waterpaper.

Examine all parts for signs of rust and corrosion, particularly the bearings.

A badly corroded Yoke and Drag Spring washer.

Opened up the bearings and this is what you find...!!
When buying a reel, I always open up the bearings and grease or oil them properly. Standard bearings are more often than not, insufficiently lubed, leading to this...

On top of the Pawl is a pawl washer... that fits under the screw.

Make sure that the Pawl engages the ratchet properly, at the right angle!

All parts that get replaced back onto the reel are coated with a quality low viscosity grease like Daiwa, Surecatch Red.

Inside the LH Side Plate....

Now you can screw the Side Plate back on after replacing the spool.
All done and happy fishing!

Now is not a good time to go fishing... said nobody... EVER!!

Sooooooooo glad I'm not the only one. :dunno:

Thanks Tony. This will help, I really do think so. Is there specific tools that I will need besides screwdrivers and pliers?
Enjoy life, go fish more and love your better half like today is your last.

Don't think so Marcos... think the older Penn Senator's are more like the Penn 49's and Jigmasters?? Dunno. But I think Alan Tani has them on his website... maybe worth a look...

Marcos... found a nice tut for you... Penn Senator 4/0 or 113H...

The reel was manufactured in the late '70's, so as I thought, it's completely different to the later models. It's got that pesky spring loaded Yoke plate that all the old Penn's had - hate them!!! ... good luck!!
