Dodge ram 3500 towing capacity +-17000lbs payload capacity +-5130lbs
Dodge ram 5500 towing capacity +-20000lbs payload capacity +-11880lbs

Who is beating this???

Those are Lb figures 3500 = 1590kg and 5500 = 2500kg, still very good!

Hi Bennie,

Why not look at a good 2nd hand Landcruiser series 100 the petrol 4.7L v8 a real machine!(engine exactly the same as in the new 200 series - and remember they say a cruiser is only run in at 500 000km`s)

You are actually absolutely right! I'll have a look around at Cruisers. Would like a diesel though as it will also be my every day car and the petrol is just too heavy on fuel.

HI Bennie,

You cannot go wrong with a Disco 3/4!!!! :win:

I used to be a staunch Cruiser/Prado supporter, but having driven a Disco 3 for the past few years, I am totally converted. I tow a Penta Caravan without any problems and my Dad bought a Disco, based on my enthusiasm and the vehicles specs and capabilities. He tows a Exclusive (way over a Ton) without any issues. I get just shy of 7km/l (14.3l/100) @ an average speed 0f 97km/h from Durban to Johannesburg towing my Car and Caraven loaded to the max. with the slightly heavier Caravan my father managed 14.6l/100 (6.8mk/l) averaging 93km/h on the same trip. Averages included stopping at tollgates etc.

The new Disco 4 has to be the ultimate towing vehicle! It has 600nm torque and I have seen it towing BIG boats up from Sodwana, without ever missing a beat!!

I would however suggest looking at the "S", not 'SE" as they all have exactly the same engine and terrain system, but the SE has more bling inside, not all of it usefull!

Bennie, I suggest you test drive the diesel and the petrol, as I found a huge difference in peformance and as far as fuel consumption is concerned I get 7.2km/l and slightly less when towing. As a matter of interest I also have the 4.0L Prado vx and the consumption on the two cars are very similar. I had a 4.5L Nissan Patrol 5km/l and 2.5-3km/l when towing also strong but thursty.

Fluffy all good and well but these things are seriously expensive, especially to use for a towing car that stands in the sun while being out at sea all day, unless you are loaded and money is no issue.

I had a look at these and I think the demos was like R750k and that was like bottom of the range!

For me Somoene that can afford to buy a car for above R200000 is loaded enough allready. But those dodge puppies would make a rich man even more happy....

Bennie it looks awesome, but I think this one still has the 3.0 KZTE spec motor..a pitty they didn`t have the D4.0D motors, a bit of a donkey especially when towing.Check out autotrader.co.za under toyota and then landcruiser and select 1999 to 2004 models, quite good value for money.

Bennie, I have a Navara 4L Petrol. 198KW. Best double cab by far!  :1t:  Take a test drive. And if you want diesel power, get the new v6  170kw 550 NM. But, you have to make some mods on the suspension. I got a OME upgrade, BFG tyres, African outback canopy. I just put a Redback replacement bumper on last week, will put the winch on this weekend. Will post a pic later.

Consumption? Whats that? Was waiting for that question. You know this is something guys dont talk about with petrol V6 bakkies! This is more for the diesel guys.

My ave consumption is about 6.5-7 km/L unloaded. In town more to 6.5. Best I got on highway without load 7.2, then one use the 6th gear cruzing. When I hook my 5.2 infanta duck, and canopy fully loaded with camping equipment and fridges for 2 weeks camping in moz, I get 5 to 5.5 km/L, mostly staying in 5th gear towing. Not sure how much it will drop with a BIG Z-CRAFT CAT like yours.

But it depends a lot on how you drive. If you have a heavy foot on town I would think 6 km/h will be a average consumption. BUT, I had a 2.8 colt diesel double cab before this one. U cannot compare the two, towing. In the colt 100km/h was about my max ave towing speed on level road towing. 120 max flat out. Any hill or strong winds, drop back to 80. Now I go 120 km/h with cruse control on in 5th with full rig towing, uphill no problem. And overtaking a breeze, with 198KW on tap. But you pay for this at the pump.

Coming back to this! Unless someone wants to sponsor me a cruizer, I'm afraid the only option for me is going to be a Land Rover Disco 3. I will be advertising my Hilux and take it from there! If you guys know of anyone interested, please let me know. Also if you find a nice Disco please let me know. I will be looking for a 2007 Disco 3 TD V6 auto with mileage not to far from 100k.

Thanks for all the feedback.
