TKEI what I gather by the law so far, and I'm sure no one really knows 100%, is that the vehicle maximum allowable tow is what you can tow. This is with any brake system what so ever. When the item being towed exceeds 3.5 ton it is required to be fitted with a hydraulic braking system that can be controlled by the driver. So even when fitting this to Bennie's boat will not make it legal but safer. It remains a horrid situation for most as one buys a towing vehicle, not being Harry Oppenheimer, you are now forced to used the vehicle daily as well. How many of us will spend 200k+ and park in the garage only for when you go fishing? The towing vehicles you get are gas guzzlers so now everyday you fork out a fortune in gas as well.

BENNIE my partner has a 1998 Discovery V8 petrol he wants to sell. Could be a good buy that maybe can be used just for towing. He has no idea what to ask and will be looking in the market to see what value. The vehicle has however been maintained by the company and is mechanically sound. Just recently did a 4000km trip with no hassles. I'm not sure of the towable specs on it either.

This is my problem, I need to use the thing daily. I had a Jeep Grand Cherokee which I used just for towing but it meant that it stood 90% of the time and was really only use for 20km on the weekend to the slip and back if the weather was good. Not only is it bad for a vehicle to stand but it is an expensive piece of machinery just depreciating in value unnecessary.

For now I would say stuff the law. Your vehicle is more than capable of doing the 20km for now. Take it on the chin if they hassle you about it.

I'm more concerned about insurance. IF something happened, the insurance wont pay out, then I loose the rig and car + if another car is damaged, it will be my fault regardless.
I also don't want to be limited. If I want to go to Moz, I just want to go!

Where do you see your business in future. Require delivery truck maybe? You see where I'm heading.

I've been a VW fan for a looong time.
Jetta had 301000km's on, ran at 14km/L, no engine problems - nada, niks.
City golf 1600 Life ran like a rocket.
Even a Caddy, but that one was a bit heavy on juice.

Problem I have is the "I R Superior" attitude that I have received from several VW sales guys in the past.

I'm going fishing, I'm going fishing, I'm going fishing

Gotta agree with you Andries !
Had a couple of VW's
One in particular, a  Golf2 GTI for a couple of years,  sold it at 491000 kms, used it from Pmb to Dbn daily ! and it was in great condition when sold !!!

Andries, I just recently bought a Polo for the missus, and HAVE to agree about the attitude of the GP dealers ! Eventually bout it in Cape Town, 7 Grand cheaper than GP, and delivered to us !
If you want, I'll pm you the details ! Great service !!!

ok ok guys, you took me the wrong way. My comment suggested that VW is reliable. Sorry if I did not bring it through more :-)

BTW, I also had a VW jetta.

But now that you triggered mt thought patterns....this amtrok is new here. Hopefully the dakar experience will count.

BTW, I'm also looking :-)

It is going to be a SAAAAD day to say goodbye to the Colt.
Who knows, maybe the guys from Mitsubishi surprise us before December, then it's game on.
At this time the AmaTrok looks a great purchase.
2L twin turbo diesel.
Less than 8L to 100 km's with 400Nm torque under the hood.

Dakar, well the make or break of any serious vehicle. :rck"

(@ Jean, agree with you, VW is good, but at any time someone with a bad experience can say the opposite, just the same as I feel about certain banks)

Any idea what they cost? I just checked the site and there is no pricing there.

My partner was quoted R 369 000.00 yesterday. This was for the top of the range model.

I have not read all 8 pages, so I appologise if this is a repeat .......

One important thing to remember when getting a vehicle, especially if its to be used for towing and even more importantly if you will be towing into remote areas.

READILY AVAILABLE PARTS, WHEN YOU ARE IN THE MIDDLE OF NO-WHERE

My choice would be TOYOTA
