PR vs FG(GT) knot - Timing
« on: June 20, 2012, 01:05:34 PM »
Heres a bit of trivia - I use both a PR and FG knot when connecting braid to mono and have full confidence in both but always wondered which is quicker - one would have thought the FG.

So I did both with 150lb mono to 60lb JB - the PR was about an inch long but longer wouldnt have chewed up much time and the FG I did 10 over/unders on each leg. I balled both tag ends with a lighter and finished off on the mainline with 4 alternating half hitches then a five turn reverse uni.

The FG chews a bit of time when putting golves on and off to pull it tight to get the braid to bite in and turn translucent before finishing the knot - if you have hands like steel you could probably do it without golves.

Times - FG 3 mins 50 secs   PR 4 mins 4 secs.

Not much in it really - just threading the line into the bobbin may be bit more difficult in wind and rocking boat.

shamwari, i think even with hands of steel ul cut them off, if not its not tight enough, but both knots are tried tested and well proven, i think with a good bobbin theres less room for "error" regarding the pr, where as if you tighten the fg without doing the correct steps you may get some damage on your braid...that fg needs to bite properly, i use a japanese knot puller, which is expensive but well worth it!!as you say both awesome knots, pulled fish on both and 100% confident in either

Have not tried the PR knot yet but have the bobbin. For me the FG knot is the bomb. This is the only one i use. Can do it with my fingers but decided to get the FG knotter which really neatens the knot and is much easier on the fingers as you can apply decent pressure :win:
