Removing Pesky spool shaft spindles
« on: June 05, 2012, 10:58:36 am »
More and more reels are coming out with a Spindle on the Spool shaft. It's a tiny steel crossbar that fits extremely tightly through the spool shaft.
It's function is to engage the bottom end of the Pinion Gear, ensuring a solid connection.

One needs to remove it to gain access to the Spool bearing.
They are an absolute mission to remove, often causing scratches to the spool shaft and damaging the spindle.

The Shimano Trinidad and Torium's both come with the spindle, but now Daiwa have unfortunately regressed into using this very user UN-friendly feature in their new BG series...  <:

So how to remove them safely and easily? Alan Tani gave me the idea...

Take an old pair of pliers and cut a notch into one of the blades with an angle grinder. This works a treat in removing those irritating t-bars.

Now is not a good time to go fishing... said nobody... EVER!!
