:cnfzd that just sent shivers down my spine. I had a close call one day as well. We were approaching a sand bank on the breede river and I was getting ready to jump off to grab the anchor and anchor the boat. Lost my footing and ended up in the drink, could have been much worse but luckily it ended with a nervous laugh.

Good reminder to keep your wits about you when pushing boats in the surf.

Thats always been my fear of boats in the surf, and having been involved with running dive boats with 12-14 divers on board.

Saw it happen in 1978 at Sodwana when one of the first big rubberduck a Gemini arrived one afternoon, TVL registered, and clearly the guy was very excited to try his new very big semi-rigid in the surf.He kept coming into, circling and going out the surf zone again. It seemed no wave could make an impression on this big duck, till one hit him broadside and washed the skipper and three mates overboard.

This guy was so over confident with his boat that he was not wearing his kill switch lanyards. The boat continued at high speed and circled in the bay and surf, still jumping every wave, till it ran over its own skipper. It eventually ran itself aground.

Everybody agreed the guy got what he was looking for but none of us prepared for what we would see when the guy was brought a-shore by his friends.

The guy was passed out by then from shock and loss of blood. Sodwana was very remote then, only the dirt road there. We fortunately had a very experienced MD with us in our group and they struggled to stabilize the guy. He was cut like that by the prop but it had also virtually lacereated and completely cut off one of his arms just below the shoulder.

Everybody thought he was going to die, but our doctor friend who was the senior district surgeon for Pretoria managed on the beach to start tieing off some main arteries, once he was satisfied they took him up to the Parksboard offices where he did more work.

It took major persuasion to get the SAAF to send a helicopter from Durban which only arrived about 6 hours after the accident which flew him to Addington. We later learned that the guy had lost his arm but survived thanks to the immediate attention/treatment by Andre Groenewald.

Always take care of boat props guys, imagine if those should make contact with your head or belly.

Thats going to hurt in the morning.

Saw that happen to a guy as well in the transkei. Brand new ski craft cat (everything out the box including rods etc). the guys tried to run straight across the bay to the river mouth and hit a sand bank. 1 chap jump overboard to hold and they got broadsided, which meant the boat now floated and was still in gear at high revs and it took off over the guy. he was hit int he back of the head (which dinged the prop) and all the way down his back like that pic and his leg through his achilies. My brothers helpd carry him on their surfboards into a bakkie and on to Umtata. Its not pretty thats for sure.

very yuck, saw one of the pushers in sodwana get caught on the leg an arm a few years ago, not very nice.

I see there was a test the new ski boat magazine about a prop that hs been designed not to cut there was a decrease in performance but the guys were putting there hands into the prop with no damage.

I've scars from an alu prop... had just beached Micaela in Malongane and was rushing to lift the motors.... my left foot just rested on top of a buried blade of the port motor as I was lifting the starboard motor...

All I can say is I felt a nice cold sensation on my 2nd toe... it went as deep as the bone all along the toe... didn't take sutures (any of you know the little hospital in Ponta?)... took a nice antiseptic cream and bandages (Bactroban - EXCELLENT stuff) ... Changed the bandages on a daily basis and kept diving for a week and finished the work. Healed out nicely...

Really something one needs to watch out carefully

Bad news.
I was in the army when that happened to my neef.
Was told he was o.k., but when I got pass and saw him his arm had about 6 slices in, his neck two and his face two.
I wasn't impressed.
Doing o.k., just a dead spot on his cheeck and a twitch in his eye.
I'm going fishing, I'm going fishing, I'm going fishing
