Nikao's Couta Trace for dead baits!
« on: April 23, 2012, 03:11:02 PM »
You will need:     1-       Some No 7 or 10 trace wire
2-       2 x no 5 barrel swivels
3-       1 x no 8 barrel swivel
4-       2 x treble’s (I used a number 5)
5-       1 x 2o hook (I used a 5o in this rig for the Demo)
6-       1 x 100lb split ring
7-       1 x 3 ounce barrel lead weight (I used a 1 ounce for this Demo)
8-       Some Dusters/Squid
9-       Split ring pliers / side cutters

First measure the wire out for the 2 trebles. I have worked  on a 30cm Bonnie here!
Using a haywire twist attach the 2 x no 5 swivels and trebles  (See pic 2).
Then cut a shorter piece of wire and make a large loop  haywire twist in the one end, once done (See pic 3), push the tag side through  the 1 ounce weight and at the other end make another haywire twist (See pic 4).
Now using the split ring, attach everything together (See  pic 5).
Next take your 2o hook and attach it to the split ring (See pic  6).
Now using a 400mm length of wire and using a haywire twist, attach  the No 8 swivel, then slide the Duster/Squid or both on and close it off at the other end with  another haywire twist and attach to the split ring (See pic 7).
Now to rig the dead bait...

What you will need:
1 - Your Couta Trace
2 - A spike or a thin screw driver works as well
3 - 2 x small cable ties

Now the bait I have shown is a bit big for this Rig and  the Squid/Duster a bit small, but you should get the idea!
First hook your bait through the nose and make sure that  your hook is straight (Bait pic 1). Once this is done using the spike/screw  driver, make a hole just under the gills and push through the cable tie (Bait  pic 2). Once you have your cable tie through then you can put it through the loop  on the bottom of the lead weight (Bait pic 3) and tighten. Then using the second cable tie, you fasten the mouth hook and weight together (Bait pic 4) now  slide your Duster/Squid into position and you are done (Bait pic 5).

If you want to you can also rig the Bonnie the same as the  one by Bwana’s posted here with the elastic band and tooth pic:  http://www.ultimateangling.co.za/index.php?topic=8756.20
