Interesting test on braid and mono
« on: January 26, 2012, 04:37:30 PM »
This is some very interesting reading I've found on the interweb!

I'm getting geared up for the competition season fishing 10kg IGFA and wanted to see what the best lines would be for actual breaking strain (as close to 10kg as possible) on mono and braid. Obviously I want the closest actual breaking strength of the line, the best strength double line knot and leader join knot and the best leader to lure connection.

There are a series of excellent articles written by Doug Olander on Sport Fishing Magazine that deal with these issues. The first is called "At the Breaking point" and offers some great advice and test results:

very interesting and great to read if you are into this type of thing. I hope it can help some of you guys out  :-)

Those articles were written some years ago... the 12 turn Bimini has since been proven to much weaker than the 20 turn...  duh

Most of those articles were included in the summaries of Knot strength articles that we have here... UA is always up to date with Technical stuff!  :corrct:

:hehe:  well that's just great! The internet has a wealth of info but not always up to date  <: !

UA is still by far the most up to date forum by far, funny I never saw the data before on here - sorry.

I did try out the 12 turn bimini last night in 20lb Sufix and all 10 of the biminis tied in 1.2m sections of line didn't break before the mainline (i.e. mainline broke before bimini). I was quite impressed. It looked a lot neater as well. Don't know if I'm keen to try it in comps though! :shk

I think it was Paulus on his knot strength test site that disproved the 12 turn Bimini to be stronger...? I can't remember now.

But as a rule of thumb...

In Mono, I do 20 turns.
In Braid, I do 50 turns.

This has been the standard in SA Rock and Surf for many years now, and we know how many hundreds of thousands of tons of fish have been landed using this setup....

20 Turn Bimini in the Mainline - joined to Leader with Back to back Fig 8's.

The standard go to quick knot for Braid to Leader in Offshore is the 7 turn Uni against a Fig 8 in the leader. There are many knots one can use, including the PR knot (which is arguably the best for Popping and Jigging), but is technique sensitive and is difficult to do when compared to the 7 turn Uni. If I was to go on a big bucks GT hunting mission, the PR knot is indisputably the first choice knot to learn.

Spot on Reefz!  :corrct:

I usually use 24 turns in my mono bimini (20lb).

50 lb mono and upwards I use the Aussie Plait which presents a neater knot through the roller guides on my rods, and I fisnish it off with a spot of UV Knot Sense for good luck and harder wearing.

On my jigging gear and flick sticks I use the PR knot only (even works on braid as light as 20lb!) and have had no failures with it yet, even on 100lb braid fully locked to big AJ's - it is a great join. You are right though - not the easiest to tie on a boat at sea when you just been smashed up, then I usually go for a Yucatan.

Aussie plait is a great choice for Offshore big mono!!  :corrct: I think Shag uses it extensively as well.

Yucatan is also a great knot, as long as you leave a decent tag end, which becomes a problem if you're casting the knot from off a reel (I like to spin with longer leaders - leader knot on the reel), that's when I go to the 7 turn Uni/Fig 8 --> used extensively by Craig Tomassen, Mark de la Hey.

With mono I use 20 turns on anything up to .45 but my fingers just aren't long enough for a 20 turn bimini on .55   :hehe:

I can't tie a proper bimini, so I use exclusively the Aussie plait... never had a problem...
