White Mussel Cracker or Brusher - advice please

My pb Cracker is 6.2kg which is not very big when it comes to Cracker. I want to improve on this and need more info like traces, water conditions, time of day etc. All info will be appreciated.  :tkx:

Buffelsbaai looked like a potentially productive area. If you land a pair of reading glasses, they're mine. Lost them when "beaching" with the kayak. :hehe:

Thanks WK. I will keep on trying until I get one.
I did not get my fish but the day was not wasted. We had a wonderful day snorkelling in the gullies and it was great to teach my 6 year old son the ropes. I took a pilchard and fed the fish and he enjoyed seeing all the fish fighting over the scraps. We had Mullets, Karanteens, Blacktails, Zebra, small Crackers and even juvenile Shad feeding all around us. Priceless!

As I said, I'm no expert, but this works for me.


Water temp of around 14 to 19 is good.  They don't like warm water.  Typically I will look clear foamy water.


I fish for crackers from the beach in areas with a sandy bottom with scattered reefs.  The fewer reefs the better, as I believe the fish tend to congregate along these rocky patches in a seemingly featureless area.  Around these rocks are usually patches of deeper water and gullies form around them.


Don't be afraid to cast close to shore with a pushing tide.


Sliding trace with hook snoot between 30 and 100cm depending on conditions - rougher seas, shorter traces.


Baits - pencil and  prawn from the beach
crab (sand or rock) if the peckers a making a nuisance of themselves
chokka and red bait / chokka and prawn combo


that's the best advice I can give on my "unconventional way" of catching cracker
