I went around tag end. This was cause it is used to lock braid loop?  That is what I thought. Tested it by pulling hard against it and it was strong. Now need to test it on a 15 kg Tuna.

When you do the 3 turn Figure 8 around the braid, do you do it around the tag end or the loop side?

Around both!

Ok this is my first post after joining ua a few months ago. sry  I have a question regarding joining small diameter braid to mono/flouro leader as I enjoy catching shad with a 7" bass rod, 10lb braid and 15 to 30 gram Halco Twisty spoon.(this setup always got me shad where other "spooners" close to me did'nt.)However I lost quite a few due to the knot between mainline and leader especialy when the sea is up or on outgoing tide.I personally do not believe that the 10lb braid (Tuffline Duracast) or 20lb flouro (Maxima) that I use are too weak since it always breaks at the knot.I also fish with the drag as loose as possible (Shimano Sedona 2500).I have used the uni knot, yucatan and bemini to braid with double braided uni to mono all off which I can break with my bare hands I found out the other day.I came across the spyker knot recently tried it and could not break it with bare hands does anybody know about this knot or have any experience with it I have not been down to the coast to test it but it looks like it might work (keeping at least 85 to 90% 0f the mainlines strenght hopefully)?

If you can break those knots with your bare hands then there is something wrong with your line... maybe your braid is tired and has areas/patches of weakness?

The 7 turn Uni/Fig8 knot has been tested time and time again by seasoned pro's - it's their go to knot. Has never failed me either, (except in Nanofil superline).

Here is the link to the Spyker knot ... http://www.ultimateangling.co.za/index.php?topic=75.0

(clap) Thanks Reefman for the reply maybe my hands are a bit tougher than average due to 15 years of racing off road motorcycles (I can bend a 6" nail). As for the leader knots I tried it seems like the braid cuts through the mono. What I like about the spyker knot is that loop around the mono whitch seems to create a larger surface area for the braid not cutting it so easily?.However I am going to try that 7 turn uni to fig. 8 again now step by step according to the pictures (maybe I was doing something wrong) and test again.

Just remember to LUBE your lines properly before tightening up on both ends. Without proper lube (gob!) the lines will burn with the heat generated by cinching them up and tightening.

I use this knot and it has also never failed me - 30lb braid to .70mm leader.  When I caught those marble rays over Xmas (2 x 19kg ) my circle hook straightened with the 2nd ray, but the knot held.  As Reefs says, lots of lube is essential not to burn the line.

It will work, but is not as strong as the Fig 8 in mono. (marginal difference).
Also the Uni tag is perpendicular to the line, as opposed to the Fig 8, which is parallel... http://www.ultimateangling.co.za/index.php?topic=3427.0

Reefz can one put some of that knot glue for lill extra strength? talking about glue what is the best to use and doesn't it weaken the mono/braid ?

UV Knotsense is the only one I'd use.

Hi Reefman,

Quick question, what is the reason for doubling the braid for the uni ? The only thing i can think of is that it allows the knot to have more bulk ? once the knot is trimmed, The loop end is taken off, so pulling from the main line braid would only apply pressure to a single coil of the uni rather than both ? I don't know if my understanding is correct or not, but some info on this would be highly appreciated.

TIA,
Zaahid

A single strand of braid will cut into the Mono too easily. A double strand is also much easier to work with.
