I have been shot down for saying this before, but I'll say it again. If you go Cat C, you might as well go for Cat B. The reason I say this is because the exam is exactly the same. The only difference is the vessel in which you do the practical evaluation with. You can have a 16' boat rated Cat B and that will do, so you don't need to launch a big boat.

The main reason why is in the future you may want to upgrade that ticket to a coastal ticket for which you now only have to pile on the hours. Why would you want Cat B - coastal?? Well it is the only way you can get "night rating". So if you ever want to go out at night you will have the ball rolling in the right direction.

Now, before I get shot for suggesting a nube skipper should work on getting night rating, you will still need to complete 1000 hours. By the time you complete this and you have survived, you should have sufficient experience.

Just my opinion.

Also did mine with Dawie Urtel in 2004, and he's excellent, surf launches at Sodwana with his trainer semi-ridged and ski-boat.
There's a fine line between fishing and standing on the shore like an idiot

Kay so I just wanna license for inland waters, which Cat is that and who in PTA does this at a reasonable price without devaluing the idea of obtaining the license?
When I die, will somebody please dress up as the Grim Reaper and attend, don't need to do or say anything, just stand there!

Thanx Reefs, do you know which Cat I should get, I know I'll never do the salt skipping thing, so it'll purely be for freshwater (inland) and do you know the estimated cost and duration of the Cat I should get?

LGF, the prices vary but expect to pay R1000+ and it takes a week for a course. There is no practical required for cat R.

Thanx Bennie, took Reefs advice and phoned Arno, did the course on Tuesday evening, the exam on Wednesday and got my temmp license yesterday, so now I'm legally on the water. Tough fines for not having the necessary papers aboard, R10000 fine or 6 months in BUBBA'S Cell or Both!!!!

Thanx a mill Reefs

Reefs, buddy, the litttle leadboat we got is a scary female-dog, she tends to stick and doesn't wanna plane at all then again I don't wanna see her plane as handling her takes some serious nerves of steel, I think she's just way too heavy for the 55 yamaha on the rear, anyhows, went out and did my first Cast 4 Cash comp and struggled a whole lot (crew didn't pitch) but enjoyed the day nonetheless, B-Hind itching to build something myself, if only the townhouse had a comunal area  :hyst:

Oh and will soon start practising casting a 13ft rock and surf rod, will try with a casting reel first as it actually is a spinning rod with two tips but if I just extend my arms slightly the casting reel isn't all that weird to handle, must try as the wife is nagging to go on a coastal holiday, so soon.

Oh my and where in Jozi are you guys going to get to hire all the protective headgear and SAPS standard issue bulletproofes with me standing there rod in hand ready to swing like a drunken papgooier snapping the 100lb leaders like 9mm shots fired @ an innocent victim who just happened to pass by a security complex when a 42 inch LED tv fell from the upper window of the house next to the veld?
