Hi again jvrens,

I see you are based in Maputo! Great... we got to organize a UA Moz Social as well!!!!

As you already know there isn't much happening in Maputo bay regarding fishing from the beach (I didn't realize Maputo had a beach?!? duh)..... some guys do fish along the "marine parade" next to Clube Naval but really there isn't much coming out  (apart from the occasional spotted grunter, croacker, etc.)...

You need to either go north (30 km at least) to Macaneta or Calanga to start having a nice beach to cast and get something decent (small sharks, couta, stumpies, etc.)... or cross the Bay to Inhaca Is. and try to fish there at Portuguese Island, the point at the lighthouse or at Hells Gate...

But hey if you are going to cross the bay, might as well do some bottom fishing or even try the deep blue...

Anytime around the neap tide is ok, for whatever destination you choose.... Let me know if you need more info on anything specific...

cheers

hi john
yes we live in triunfo, maputo.
our kids are coming for a short visit and they want to scuba and fish around maputo -maybe not more than a daytrip distance away - husband has to work and i'll have to do the driving.
if you can help with information about fishing boats going out who will take an angler with for the ride, i'll appreciate it very much
they also want to walk accross to xefina. do you know whether they'll be able to cath any fish at this island.
where can i find out about tides?
sorry about all the questions, but we are not anglers at all, the boyfried however is and would like to scout out fishing places in and around maputo for future trips.

Here's a link to a page with tide tables for 2010. It will be updated in Jan for 2011...
http://www.mobilegeographics.com:81/calendar/year/3587.html

Now, to answer a few of your questions:

1. SCUBA diving
There are no diving centers in Maputo... you either go the Inhaca Is and dive from the Gone Fishin' or you need to go to Ponta do Ouro... a few individuals on their personal capacity do dive using their own equipment (cylinders, BCs, etc.) and might take you out... It takes about an hour to get anywhere decent to dive... so they might ask for a contribution towards the fuel costs... when they get here let me know if their are keen to go out... Will see if someone is available to take them out...

2. Fishing charters
I know a few anglers that will gladly take people out on fishing charters... will PM you a few contacts...

3. Xefina Is.
Careful with crossing to Xefina Is. on foot... this is only possible during the spring tides and you must watch the tides carefully... it is a long walk and as you know there are NO coast guard in Moz... you're on your on! Fishing at Xefina Is is pretty much like fishing in Maputo... the area is heavely fished out (nets all over the place)!!!! It's a good quite sport for sunbathing, etc but forget about fishing...

Sorry not very good news I'm afraid but once you get established you'll see there are a few interesting things to do around here...

If you're going to spend some time around here I would also suggest you join one of the clubs (Naval or Maritimo)... much easier to make contacts and get to know what's going on... there are quite a few water sports happening including jetskis, sailing, kite, surfboarding, scuba, fishing, etc...

Let me know if you need further info

cheers
