Wanting to try my hand at rod turning for a while now I decided to build a rod turner.

For the motor i used a old Singer sowing machine motor and a burnt out motor from an vending machine. The vending machine motor got a nice reduction gearbox on helping with getting the right speed.

For the chuck i used a water pipe reducer that was fitted to the motor shaft by means of an old foot that came of a machine. I turned the feet down to fit snugly into the pipe reducer.

For the end support i used a piece of wood cut with a v and lined with carpet.
This i made adjustable for different rod lengths.

Here is a an idea you may want to look at, to use in place of your v-block to support the rod.

Hi Riaan

Since the photos was taken i aded a second turner to the base. This i use only for drying the rods after it is done with flexcoat. The rod fitted here will be turning at 6 rpm.

The one that you can currently see in the photos can be set to a low or a high speed. Used to be a old sowing machine motor and foot control.
Unfortunately in hospital right now with my back that showed me this  :flck: .

As soon as i come out i will post more photos, I have just finished one rod so i will let you gents decide if they should ban me from touching another rod. :hehe: :hehe: :hehe: :hehe: :hehe:

Maybe a visit from Xlebo will speed up recovery..... :hehe: :hehe: :hehe:

Would like to see the rod when it is done. I am busy stripping down one of my rods at the moment.

Back just packed up while sitting in front of the computer. Was admitted on Sunday. Being released today.

Will probably finish the rod in the next few days. will then post pics.
