Usage will probably depend on you. There are times when a dingle comes into its own especially when fish are far out and that extra few metres make the difference between catching and blanking.

I tend to do this but if fish are close then I tend not to use dingle. I would rather bait as normal.

For trying to get in-eds, I use circles especially on head baits but for eds, I use j hooks 4'0-6'0

Once again, I stress that this is a personal preference and not fishing gospel.

2 main advantages of a dingle dangle:
1. You can clip your sinker to the dangle in a straight line, thus allowing you to get the most aerodynamic distance in the cast - no helicopters through the air and a streamlined bait to go max distance.
2. You get to fix a Circle hook through the top eye of the dingle, rather than just through the lips of the bait - a type of bridle rig - a proven and effective method of using circles. At the same time preventing the hook from pulling out or tearing the bait when pushing a cast.

Dangles are not suited to J-hooks. With a dangle, the fish needs to swallow the bait, then the circle hook comes into play.

Dangles can also be tough if you have small mouthed fish feeding on your bait that do not swallow the entire bait

When fish are shy , or feeding shy , you will have difficulty for a fact .

Like reefmam said , the fish need to mouth the bait , and Basicly swim off .
I don't us them for eds .

Agree, I would rather use a Bait Carrier dangle for edibles, where a J hook is pinned inside the bait.

I make a small one to hang on a circle hook for  :tgr: , just enough to hold a chicken heart or maybe a chunk or sardine, I also fit it as a 'trap' hook,  :tgr: 's bite short some times

It's a bit light, but it should work fine with your threading tool. I'm using #14 Malin wire. The wire strength isn't that important because the fish has to swallow the hook which is attached to your steel trace.

Using J-hooks you can get the same advantages as a dangle with a piece of strong braid or dacron and a oval split ring. Here is what I do.
Tie the trace as normal then attach the length of braid or dacron also to the eye of the hook or to the hook snoot just above the hook the decide how far beneath the hook you want to clip and tie in the split ring.
When baiting up you wind the braid to the hook shank with your cotton as you put on your bait or your foam. Remember a pin or toothpick through the bait and eye of the hook to secure your bait from shooting up the hook snoot when it hits the water.
Then simply clip it and rip it

if you are used to fishing circles for eds already using a dangle is great.... especially on softer baits like beaten to a pulp chokka or sand prawn...  Even occie leg works great...

This is where i prefer a strip of hair curler.... with the bait under the circle the hookup is perfect... i do like a softer dingle for this application.  i make it with dacron down the middle of soft foam for example or soft wire, and a splitring at the bottom.... you dont have to worry about the wire collapsing in the cast now.

It is deadly for kob with occie... and the same rig will land smoothies, without thinking in fact it it takes its on.  For smaller fish where you are not usually casting a mile, just a triangle wedge of curler, sharp side hooked onto the circle, tie the chokka or prawn on... a stump or galjoen or kolstert or smaller kob would grab once and the bait is off... but now grabs, it doesnt come off and they grab the whole thing... VAS!
Men... what lies ahead on that beach... IMMORTALITY.... TAKE IT IT"S YOURS!!!!!!
