The bait clip is on the main line above the lead, The lead will be the running sinker and the hook is on the bottom of the trace as you lift the hook the lead will pull the line tight and when the hook is clipped the sinker will be on the bottom holding the line tight.
it will increase the distance for casting with bait on

There are some leads that do have a clip on for the same purpose.

It released every time I test it - force of the fall separate the hook from the clip

More images for bait clips :

Bait clips in their various forms are used to clip your trace or snood   either up or down so that it is streamlined against main rig body during   the cast rather than hanging loose and creating drag.  They can be as   simple or complex as you like with a number of options available for   purchase or simply make your own.

Looks like it can work,  problem with all the wat clips is the release. I would try to stick to stainles as far as possible. Some of the sinkers comes with it, but are sometimes not correctly bend. You need some sort of wire that can take a permanent form,  something that wont bend,  like someof the spring wire.

Good idea Hrogers.

I bought a few of those plastic"Impact Shields" years back and it was not very successful. They were very unreliable when it came to releasing the bait, I actually caught a Wave Garrick at St Lucia and the hook was still in the clip with the fish.... :craz:
