To get the coils tighter turn the entire coil back on itself.

Here is one of my new safety lanyards that I made for my kayak. I opted for Velcro to secure it around the rod. I used weedeater line and hand stitched the velcro with 5.5kg mono.  w;k

 :tkx: You can't see it on my photo but I used a thinner dowel, about 1cm in diameter and achieved a tighter coil.

Dont know how to explain. I will try and make a video. But let me try to explain. If you right handed take the end of the coil in your right hand and the coil in your left. Now start turning the end of the coil in your right hand in the opposite direction unil you get to the end of the coil in your left hand. You will notice a halfround in the coil as it moves down the coil.
