« on: July 05, 2014, 04:23:32 PM »
Ok guys, first time trying to do a tut, lets hope I get it right.
This rig can be used for a variety of fish on False Bay surf, Muizenberg to Maccassar.
I have caught numerous Kob, Steenbras, Blacktail, Galjoen and Stumpie on it and it works for variety of baits too, worm, mussel, fish bait, prawn and mussel.

Required:
Mustad 2/0 longshank hook
Mustad 2/0 Ultrapoint (Beak bait heavy) with an off-set hook eye
2x Size 3 beads
2x Size 4 beads
Size 2 power swivel
Size 4 barrel swivel
Medium sized float

Tie longshank 2/0 with in Improved Clinch knot and then place 2x size 3 beads.

Finish off hook snoot with a size 2 power swivel, hook snoot about 50cm long.

Put sinker snoot's barrel swivel over main line, insert 2x size 4 beads and attach to the power swivel.
You now have a sliding sinker trace, which should be about 60cm.

Normally a 60z grapple sinker works best for the heavy wash and under current.
Nylon grapple works best for me, but if water too turbulent and nylon still rolls, then change to a wire grapple.

Used it with moonshine worm, blood worm, mussel, prawn and small red eye or mullet.
The top (red) hook is not tied, so it can slide to accommodate a long blood worm or go through the lip of a mullet and the main hook in the back/side.

Nice . thats for taking the time .

I used similar rigs in FBay for Kob and Steenbrasse .

Is your float fixed ?

We basically stopped fishing double hook traces  , for a couple of reasons but the main one was when we fished long casts over a shallow bank like Brokenroad . We hooked plenty of fish , but also lost a number of fish and the only way we improved was to drop the second hook , we made loads of tests but this seemed to be the problem.
The other reason is we all went with Circles , and doubt If we will ever go back to Double J's

I will admit , that the that second  hook very often get the fish , hence loads of guys still fishing this way . This was our theory : the second hook get the fish , and now you have the fixed hook [ your main hook] swinging around and getting caught on what ever there might be ,including the fish ,  in the case it will foul hook the fish outside the mouth lets say behind the gills ,the hooks seem to pull .... even sea weeds /grass and Kelp and this drag it causes will also effect your hooked fish , and might result in a hooke pulling , just the thought of it makes me 'iffy ' lol :creep:

The float is loose.
I have tried circles and did not get good results, but i bought more circles yesterday, going to keep trying them until i get the results everyone say they have.
Want to use circles to avoid foul hooks and injury to the small kobbies.
That said, about 80% of the hook ups are on the skelm hook, so the circles would have to perform to beat that.

The 'thing ' that makes Circles so lekker to fish with , is that if your hooked up , that circle is not coming out until you remove it . even with a slack line they sit . One mission me made to Makaza [we like to fish there by the trappies ], I sat in the bakkie , nursing a giant hangover , i dozed of or passed out [ can't remember LOL ] my rods still in the water , I woke up and the kob was on the beach , beached itself , and my sinker in the process snapped off too now that might have not happened with a J , but the circle was in the scissors VAS . It might just be that I love circles so much because of my method of fishing and my 'mobility' issues LOL ...
Needles to say , the hangover was gone .
