BOAT ACCIDENTS WHY ???
« on: February 22, 2011, 09:05:15 AM »
Morning all, read that there have been 2 boats flip in the last couple of days, one at Umkomaas with divers and one at Park Rynie with some serious injuries. The sea is huge from the cyclone, what makes the skippers take the chance ?? if they are.
A bad days fishing is better than sitting at home moping.

While in Mozambique a crowd arrived with 3 boats from up country cases of dop, flying their Blue Bulls flags in the trees. We only fished 3 days, on the 3rd day the sea was huge, 3m waves and the launch was not nice. The forth day we opted not to launch but these okes were brave. First one launched and the boat got washed up on the beach 50m away. The second one launched and the boat got washed up 150m away. Believe it or not, the third bunch of okes launched! The shore break just flooded their boat right there and sank it before even turning it. Eventually the dive camp manager ran down the beach and had to stop these cowboys. Fortunately nobody got hurt apart from their egos!

Why??? Damn good question!

...cases of dop, flying their Blue Bulls flags...

Elementary my dear Watson Bennie!
I believe that they are motivated not just by stupidity but by the fact that they have driven this far and will not be outdone by the weather. Or for local boys if they have paying customers. I have done fishing on rocks that I knew was dangerous because of the swell on cause I have just done 1100Km and have only 3 days to fish.

Why, is a big question and who knows, but sometimes in life you have to learn to say NO, this unfortunately comes with experience.

<10 launches, >1000. in between is the dangerous bit.
Less than 10, you are still starting and naturally scared / cautious of everything. You check the bungs 3 times, warm up motors every 5 minutes, double check life jackets, etc, etc,
Over a 1000 launches you realise that you know nothing, have had the stuff scared out of you, prayed for a safe return, learnt how to navigate in the dark without GPS, radio, and treat each launch with the reverence it deserves.

In between these random numbers, you think you know what you can do and how to do it. You will be proven wrong if you do it enough times.

Did you know?

That the commercial fishing industry has the highest number of occupational injuries (IOD)

90 % are avoidable, 8 % are due to equipment failure (mechanical etc)
And only 2 % will happen no matter what.

I agree with Trav man there are only so many times you can point your boat at the back line and put the hammers down and get away with it.

I would rather sit on the beach and wish to be out at sea than to be out at sea and wish to be sitting on the beach
