After a few months away from a good, relaxing, bottom fishing trip, and also because I was owing one of these to my dad, we (myself, dad and kid brother) decided to go fishing for the pot last Saturday (19 June).
Weatherman expected a slight breeze early in the morning and flat seas for the rest of the day. Exactly what we needed! The neap tide was perfect: less that 1 m variation and 2 days before the dead tide!
We met at the Club at 7:40 and got the boat ready and launched by 8:40. We had a choppy sea all the way (45 min) 'till we got to the 3M area (14 nm ENE of Maputo), to a few marks, which didn't produce the week before when Serra Moz went there.
Well, lines in and a few minutes later I got a very excited shad and a red snapper on our fresh chokka! It was the beginning of a nice day out... a few large rubberlips, red snappers and even a +/- 7 kg golden kingfish! We used a few small emperors as livies and lost 4 to what I think were large rockcods! Two broke my 150 lb leader and the other 2 were lost while fighting the monsters with 25 Lb tackle!
A few birds were diving in the area and I tried pulling a few small feathers and rapalas for snoek but nothing... we call it a day at 15:00 and got back with enough fish for several sessions while enjoying the world cup!
A fantastic day out, with good company and nice catches... what else can you ask for?
