Willyjim's old reel
« on: February 18, 2012, 03:09:02 PM »
I've just uncovered one of my lated Dad's centerpin reels, it's in a real state (pardon the pun)and I want to recondition it. It is aluminium with a brown coating that has been seriously coroded away in places, what do I use to clean it down to bare metal amd then I guess an etch primer and what do I paint it with. It still spins nicely although the drag is non existant and it only has one handle, Dad used to cast a 1/2 oz sinker and bait for miles with this and his split cane rod. He caught some nice fish as well particularly sea bass.
when I die, may my wife not sell my fishing tackle for what I told her I paid for it... and I have bought more, a severe case of TA

Well worth restoring!!
I'm no expert at painting, but I'm not sure about painting aluminium. As far as I know it cannot be done successfully.
Is it not worthwhile having it re-anodised or even powder coated instead?
Another option would be a decorative water transfer coating - especially if corroded areas need to be filled. :dunno:

Thanks PH, the painting is ok you just need an etch primer, It's what is best to put on over that that I'm unsure of  :tkx:
