Tighten your Cast Control knob, and then throw smoothly without jerking the rod at all. Practice this until you are comfortable with it. Then start loosening the Cast control knob, bit by bit, until you become more confident, to open it up more. The Cast Control knob controls how fast the spool will spin. If you jerk the rod, the spool will spin faster than the sinker is taking line off the reel... = overwind or a burnt thumb.

Do exactly as per what reez mentioned. try not to put pressure with your thumb on the spool as  you cast. and try a longer drop. this happened to me recently, for some weird reason i tried a short drop compared to the normal longer drop (just over half rod length) casted and EINA!!! burnt my thumb bad. good luck  :clwn
