Paddle Bait trace - (For Big Sharks)
« on: May 11, 2011, 01:55:41 PM »

What follows is a paddle bait trace to be taken out deep on a kayak ....... For some big   :shrk:   :brnz:

It consists of a 16/0 Owner circle hook snelled, secured with flemish eyes and crimps on the opposite side, i have used heat shrink on the steel crimp and on the windon, an aluminium crimp with rubber crimp protector

The steel is 600lbs masons trolling cable, heat treated and kink resistant, 10meters (I have been bitten off on 7meters)

The windon leader is a halco 400lbs - 7,2 meters, secured to the snap swivel with aluminium crimp and plastic thimble

The ballbearing swivel on the steel is a 550lbs kingfisher ball bearing swivel

The snap swivel is a 600lbs centro

The weight in the middle is a 12oz, tied with a very short piece of .55 kingfisher leader, no more than 10cm

This is the same style the guys are using in the states for there big sharks
The bait is paddled out, and dropped 200 - 300m out, sometimes further
Whether the fish swims in or out with your bait, the weight assists to set the hook, once the fish feels it is hooked, it will generally swim out again, leaving you to only tighten up the drag to make sure the circle hook is driven home properly

I'm just confused how do you get bitten off on a circle? If it sets in the corner the fish is biting on the hook so only if it turns and catches the slack in its mouth can you get bitten off?

I have experienced this on my swim bait traces and have adapted it to this new rig, when a shark gets wrapped up in your leader, it will either rub you off or bite you off, hence the extra length of steel

Ok cool. I also keep forgetting its a paddle bait trace NOT a swim bait trace so weight isn't a factor. I think I am going to stick with my lighter traces for now. I reckon that with the clear water that we often find the less steel the better. Though if I'm fishing in seriously murky water I'm putting some 400lb on!

Very interesting set up you have their BigG. Taking a bait out with a ski has allways been a dream for me. Its also very interesting to see how we as anglers adat our self to our fishing condicions. (clap) cred for you
