Hammerheads also now on same protected list as GW.... perhaps no more pictures, or on any form of league scorecard would be a good idea...

Just a tad late for cray season I scheme. I dunno perhaps if they work really really hard they could be in time for 17-18 but I wouldn't hold my breath

So was I until I read this on sfsa yesterday and I quote the author:
I am quite surprised by the negative reactions from many of you guys. All hammerhead species were put on the ICUN Red List about 4 years ago - which when you look at the dramatic fall in populations, I thought was rather a good thing. Greater hammerheads have seen their numbers decline by over 80% in the last 25 years, research on Scalloped Hammerheads populations suggest declines in abundance of 50-90% over periods of up to 32 years in several areas of its range, including South Africa, the northwest and western central Atlantic and Brazil and Smooth Hammerheads have also seen very steep declines in number in many parts of the world. This move to give them the same protection as Great White sharks has been on the cards for a couple of years already and many other countries have already done the same a while ago. Over 2 years ago I wrote an article for Angling Times, warning that Hammerhead Sharks populations were in free fall globally and that the S.A. angling community need to seriously re-look how badly we deal with this species. The fact that our anglers use these sharks as one of the main swim bait species in the Transkei is shocking in itself. Take some time to read through the ICUN links about the various species that I will post below -
http://www.iucnredlist.org/details/39386/0
http://www.iucnredlist.org/details/39385/0
http://www.iucnredlist.org/details/39388/0
End quote all credit to the author
Then a guy i respect a lot mentioned on the same thread how older tuna fishermen spoke of big hammers following the boats that have disappeared.
Just like red Steenbras or gw or dusky kob. Just because there are lots in one area, does not mean the species is not in dire dire trouble.

Very interesting, but there are other species that also need protection which I thought would be more likely to be banned.
What happens about all the Hammers that are bycatch by trawlers and long liners? I guess its one of those things we cant control, and we just have to hope the ban will help.

Yip for sure I still find it strange that species not generally commercially harvested locally, struggle to make it onto the list. Inshore hake trawl is my pet hate but sassi thinks that is green. It's a money spinner and will stay green. Steenbras should have been on there yesterday already.

I agree completely, both shallow water and deep water hake are being over exploited.
I am still a strong believer in 2 things:
Dusky Kob should be on the list (Or at least add a maximum size limit for breeding fish, say above 10kgs)
Leeries only reach sexual maturity at 80cm (If my memory serves me right) so surely there size limit should change
And then I agree with your Steenbras comment. We are not in a good space at this point in time. Will we ever get our fish stocks up to par?

newest regulations set by bassbug, immediate and effective.
commercial fishing:
-vessel longer than 9m will be banned and sent to a watery grave yard to establish a reef. procedures of stripping and cleaning a vessel to be followed.
-vessel shorter than 9m will not exceed the combined weight of 100kg per week. license to filled and signed on every outting.
-vessel will not leave their home waters, saps, military and naval security will use brute force for those that step outside the allowed range.
-any international vessel seen entering south african waters will be added to the reef build.
recreational fisherman:
-non eds to be return unharmed
-eds may be taken out but encouraged to be released
-only a single unmatured ed for each member of the household may be kept, no longer than 30cm (head to fork measurement)species list to be adhered to. the authority in this matter understands a single may not be much but by adding veggies and salad should compile "enough food for one" rule.

Hi everyone. I took a strole on the Durban North Pier today with my wife. Touching base with 3 anglers, they explained that one can buy a permit for entering and fishing there. Does anyone know where to buy this permit. Municipality or Transnet? Contact details will be great.
Blessings.
