Western shores Fanies Island Charters Creek
« on: June 01, 2019, 02:22:36 AM »
Does anyone have any information on current lake levels and fishing the lakes?  Also, what have they done to restore the lake system?  I understand they may have reconnected the canal between the Umfolozi and the estuary at Honeymoon bend and removed dredge spoil at the mouth area and reconnected with the Umfolozi there too?  When last did the St Lucia system become tidal for any length of time and is there any hope of this being achieved long term? Lots of questions but have been out of the country for many years now and keen to know.  Thanks guys.

St Lucia hasn't been open to the sea in 3-4 years. The entire system dried up due to drought about 2 years ago. All fish died. Now the system only has Freshwater fish.

Thanks for the response. Very sad. Let's hope that one day it becomes a salt water estuary again. Is the Umfolozi still open to the sea or does all of its water now flow into St Lucia?

Mfolozi not open to the sea, only flowing into the estuary and depositing thousands of tons of silt

Bugger. Back to square one.   There was a time they were going to buy back the farms and re-esrablish the wetland filter. I guess that did not happen.  Really appreciate the feedback. Tight lines and thanks again.
