Myth Busters - Shimano Spool pins???
« on: October 05, 2010, 08:21:39 PM »
I got told a long time ago that when spooling up a reel that you should pull out the pin on the spool that you tie your line on to.The pin's weight supposedly affected the spool's balance and created a vibration.I have seen this posted time and time again over the years.
Today I had a bit of a suprise.
I recently bought a second hand TN30 .The reel was supplied " bare shaft " with the pin still attached. The first thing I did was pull the pin out and wind up some line.I struggled to get the reel to cast and it vibrated quite badly so I stripped the reel down and sent the bare spindle into a balancing shop ( they balance things like aircraft turbines etc etc so they are quite good ) and asked them to have a look at it.
Without the pin in the spool was totally out of balance , with the pin in the spool was almost vibration free.
It seems that the Shimmies spools are balanced from the factory with the pin in.
Comments ???

Ok, seriously now,

Im sure Shimano would have thought of that before the put the pin in ! I believe that the "vibration" WITH the clip on, is an old wives tale !

both my toriums had a vibration with the pins in, you can feel it if you put in a hard cast, after pulling the pins out the vibrations disappeared. I think the older toriums are possibly not balanced with the pins fitted, Shimano may have rectified the problem now..my 2c. :dunno:

My Torium50 has the pin in it and is vibration free, but the Tor30 has a bit of a vibration. Not sure if the pin is in or out though, as I bought it second hand. Perhaps I need to respool it to have a look...could be interesting...

Very interesting subject! Because of the hype regarding vibrating spools in the past, I also removed the pin out of my Trini 30 when it was brand new, but luckily it has never affected the spool... thank goodness! Because I pulled a phat trying to get the pin out! No ways it's ever going to go back in again!

Bit more info from another forum is that pulling the pin was only ever needed on toriums , not trinidads . Why that should be is beyond me but kinda fits in with the rest of the comments here :cnfzd

When you reach 50, you don't pull muscles anymore, you pull fat's (phats are better tho').
