INFO on fishing in USA
« on: April 28, 2016, 09:34:49 AM »
I fortunately will be travelling o the USA and after visiting NY and Detroit, will spend a few weeks in a beachfront home at Surfside Beach South Carolina :yipee: , a few meters from the renown  200m pier .  Can anyone offer advice on :

A)  Taking rods on aircraft (Emirates) to the USA, and an internal flight NY to Detroit. Can I take a 3piece 12' rod onboard :dunno: ??

B)  Regulations on pier fishing , I will buy a general fishing license and have residents access to the pier :fshn: :fshn: :fshn: :fshn: :fshn: 24 hours pd.

C)  I intend taking a 12' 5 oz 3piece surf rod / Daiwa30 multiplier and a 8' 2 piece tiger spinning rod / Daiwa  grinder.
is this a sensible choice ?? , my main fear is transportation therefore a 4' broken down length rod. Tackle will be basic hooks etc, and a few sinkers
should I take lures , plugs, spinners if so what.

 D)  And this is taking a chance  :hehe:any hot fishing spots a along that coast near Myrtle beach.

This will be my first and last chance for a trip like this any advice will be most helpful. Colin :toppie:

Hi Colin, speak to Gavin Erwin (Maybe pm him) he went to the US last year and took some tackle with, so maybe he would be able to help you.

Colin, tackle is cheap as chips in the USA and it would probably be less hassle just to buy some outfits over there. The piers are well patronised and a tour of the local tackle shops will tell you all you need to know, there are also regular fishing reports online and in the newspapers. Some of the piers also have rental shops where you can buy bait and rent tackle on a daily basis.

Colin, Bud, rods over there (Bass Pro Shops) is way more expensive than here in sunny SA, believe me. I bought three rods and they were (what I thought over there) cheap. Upon my return one of the rods was available in SA and at half the price, when converted the USD to ZAR, this was not the main issue. I had also bought a secure rod tube and stuffed both ends of the tube with soft foam, wrapped the rods in bubble wrap and still had one rod a whole heap shorter when I got home than when I bought it, thankfully it was the one that was available in SA. Lures and the likes are actually cheap, not sure of current prices, but it was way cheaper when last I went to the states.

Airlines normally don't have an issue so long as you are allowed to check it a specified number of luggage pieces I.e. 2pc and then there might be a weight restriction on your ticket and as long as you are within these parameters then there shouldn't be an issue. However them Yanks are a wee bit more difficult concerning their national/domestic flights. I bought the rods in Chicago and flew to LA without issues. Upon returning from LA I had a stop over in DC and I had arguments for hours to not pay excess baggage fares for the odd shaped luggage, yes the rod tube. Same airline that flew me to LA from Chicago.

As far as the choice of gear go, I couldn't tell you anything. What I can tell you is contact the different airlines you'll be flying with and get written confirmation (e-mail) that you can check such luggage in without having to pay any additional costs and take out insurance on it if it's not more than the rod/s you take with.

Hope this helps a bit at least.

U'r welcome. When is your trip?

Remember that their hunting season stops now and they're going into their fishing season, not sure if this is good or bad? Good in that the shops will be stocked with fishing related gear but bad as the prices will not be with percentage sales now, as would be the case for hunting related gear.

Enjoy the trip Colin , and of course Bass Pro shops , which in comparission  to ours we have here makes ours look like spaza shops on the corner , they are HUGE and have a variety of stuff that will make your eyes water .... lock the wallet up in the car its safer that way .. :hyst:
