Trip necessaties, St. Lazarus Banks April 2015
« on: February 24, 2015, 01:44:00 PM »
Fellow members,

I received an awesome offer to form part of a 3 day weekend fishing trip with Lucky Charters during end April.   This will include flights from OR Thambo to Maputu and then Pemba, where we will board a 36 foot Yacht "BOM DIA" to cruise to the final destination.

Now my since this will be my first popping/jigging expedition in the first quarter of my existence, can some of the regulars and more experienced guys shed some light on trip necessities, hardware, software.  Take note that I am a novice and my tackle is not the 100% suited/ recommended choice, but heck you got to start somewhere if you have a burning passion for this type of fishing.  I love to catch Gt's from the shore.

Shed some light and knowledge on the expectations, the let downs (like a heavily winded journey) what you have encountered etc.

How to pack, luggage weights, rod weight, etc. Recommended lures, lines, braid etc??

Things one forget and miss on a trip.  Just some talk to let me day dream more, Please..

I'll be anxiously waiting for the replies.

Regards
Vis Lubbe

Boy, this could take a while... how's about you start by listing the tackle you currently own, and we take it from there?? Also maybe advise what sort of tackle budget you've allowed yourself?
Below is a list we had for a recent, fairly similar trip - I'm not going to edit it, use what you think is handy:
PAPERS AND DOCS

Wallet
Passport
Travel insurance documents.
Yellow fever card
Forrex
Air tickets
Smokes (DUTY FREE)
Hard liquor (DUTY FREE)
Cell phone chargers
Camera
GoPro with all accessories
Camera Charger
Memory cards (I'm taking a 1 Terrabite harddrive, so we can all copy onto that)
Think we need a special adaptor for plugs

FIRST AID AND TOILETRIES

Malaria pills
Yellow fever shots
Panado
Plasters
Sun lotion
Rehydrate
Stomach medicine
Mozzie Spray  (BUSHMAN)
Myprodol
Cut and sting cream
Snacks

CLOTHES
3 hats
2x shades
5x undies
4x shorts
4x shirts
2x long sleeved shirt quick dry
Buff
2x long pants quick dry
1x warm jacket
Gloves
Sunglasses
Slops
Shoes for boat
Socks

TACKLE

Extra braid (take 2 x 30lb, 2 x 50lb, 2 x 80lb)
Jigs (25 x 180-200gr, 25 x 400-500gr, Bucktails, squiddies, plastics with lead-heads)
Poppers (Each should have 2 DECENT poppers, Darkstar GT Mania, CUBERA or Skipjack150 or the likes, then another 6 or so spares for in total)
Stickbaits (Starwalker 180F and 180S, 3-4 each, you can look at the Darkstar Ulua, Wahoo etc which are more expensive, also 2 each of the Starwalker140 or 160)
Spinners (LOTS of Iron Candys, bullet spoons - you loose a lot of them by casting off, couta, wahoo etc, 1oz - 2oz, and ANY light lures/plugs - I have MANY plugs we can use and ordering "Bite-me" spoons - PLENTY)
Trolling lures - I'll take a few sailfish lures and divers- won't use it often
Reels
rods
leader - .55mm, .80mm, 1.1 or 1.2mm, don't be afraid of even 250lb leaders!!
hooks - JM Monster 13/0 for 400-500gr jigs (x35), JM Monster 9/0 for 150-250gr jigs (x35), JS Inline 8/0 for Starwalker 180 (x2 per lure), JS inline 7/0 for Starwalker 160 (x2 per lure) or 6/0 for the SW140. JM Monster 11/0 for poppers (x3 per lure)

For a Topwater/jigging trip I would try to have at least the following on board with me.
100lb popping outfit 18-20K reel decent rod- This would be for Targetting the gt's and at ST lazuras Doggies if you are lucky
Lures- Poppers, Stick baits and pencil poppers 100 to 200gr

50lb Medium Spinning outfit 8k reel 7 ft rod - general Gamefish outfit Couta, Sailies, Tuna, wahoo etc.
Lures - Mostly stickbaits with some poppers like the shimano orca's saltiga sliders, Yo-zuri Shasimi bull poppers and various stickbaits,

30lb light spinning outfit 5k reel and 8ft areocast or equivelent- for buggering around with bonnies and taking a break
Spoons, GT- icecreams, onde onde type lures

50-60lb jigging outfit 8-10K reel jigging rod Shimano makes a nice heave trevela thats a great buy for the rice.

Let us know what you have in the man cave and we can adapt from there.

Hi Yakuza, Exciting stuff doing your first popping/jigging trips. Be careful its like a drug, once you start you have to have more and more!!

If you PM me your email I'll send you the recommended tackle and gear list if you want that we send to customers for our trips. There is a lot of stuff to remember from travel insurance through to gear to basic medical kits etc.

Cheers,
Nick

Dear gents,

After typing a missive heads up which by the way took me 20 minutes to furnish I now have to do every thing all over again.

So   to start I want to make it clear that I'm no pro or expert in the   offshore popping field, but I did gather allot of my info solo from   shore popping. I really like to learn new things.

So after   numerous discussions with some of the fishing volk I new and my number   one trip advisor and tackle dealer from Pretoria. We came up with a list   of the most basic items I will need. Take into consideration that these   trips are freakkin expensive to say the least, and then you still need   tackle if you start a fresh.
*marked items I have no details of as yet

So I'm still busy buying/gathering/borrowing/scouting equipment at fair prices for this trip.

This far my bag consists of:

Rods:
Quantum boca popper 9ft6 (100-200g) brand new
* Daiwa popper rod 8ft2 (200g)
Kaibutso old spec 9ft2 (200g) brand new
Trevela 6ft2 MH (100 - 215g) brand new
Heavy jigging setup (rated - 500g) rod, reel and jigs for this is borrowed
Exage spin 11ft M (0 - 200g)

Reels:
(Take   note that Shimanos are WAY to expensive for me, and I had absolutely NO   luck with Penn grinders so I'll stick to my trust worthy Quantums, for   the have been tested to the max already)
Quantum Cabo pts 60
2 x Quantums Cabo pts 80's
Old spec Saragosa 8000

Braid:
(New braid)
Best deal for strength available to me now is the Suffix 832 Cast 8 strand, also my preferred braid
3 x 80lb spools for the Quantums
2 x 40 lb spools for the Gosa and spare spool

I'll continue with a new post

Oh and a big thank you to Nick for that list you sent me, it steered me in the right direction and I also made myself one killer list.

So with regards to the Lures (take into account tackle is HELL expensive and everything needs to be rigged by Heavy duty terminals so this make each lure's purchase even more nerve wrecking and distasteful towards my budget)

Lures - Popping:
2 x Halco Rooster's haymaker poppers (biggest size not certain of weight)
3 x Wild dogss (155g)
2 x Darkstar cubera's (150g)
1 x Darkstar skipjack 120

Lures - Stickbaits:
1 x Wild dog (120g)
4 x Darkstar Starwalkers (any size, floating and sincking)

Lures - Jigs:
Assorted Jigs from 100g - 400g I'll only be able to check same on the Easter weekend, taking my dad's lures here

Lures - Trolling
5 x Rapala x raps
5 x Halcos
Halco Gt jigs
5 rigged sailie Kona's
2 rigged marlin Kona's
5 dead bait drift/troll traces
8 live bait troll traces (with sinkers for different depths)

Lures - Spin
10 assorted small spoons
10 assorted buck tails and whip tails
white metal spoons
2 x each long nose and flat face 5 & 7 oz plugs

Then comes the personal items like:
toiletry + pills
Go Pro and accessories
3 quick dry shirts L/s
5 quick dry pants L/S
Jacket
Buffs
Caps
Sun tan lotion
Sunnies

Now my biggest concern is the packing aspect, as far as I'm conserned you get:
20 kg check in
7 kg sport equipment
7 kg hand luggage

Where do I fit all the stuff into? Haha as I read some good tips off of this forum and the Gtpopping forum for packaging. But yeah we all do have some concers.

Oh and I just paid my trip today. SUPER DUPER STOKED!!

Almost  :sreel: :gt:

Are those the LAM allowed weights? Of you're flying LAM check the upgrade cost to business class, its usually under 2 grand to upgrade but gives you 30kg on your checked bag. I dont know what the cost is for overweight baggage but may be worth your while considering.....
