Rod question
« on: May 20, 2014, 08:19:07 AM »
Hi All

I have a 10ft exage that i would like to shorten to 9ft to make it an awesome yellowtail spinning rod is it possible to shorten the rod some how without taking any from the tip section i dont want to loose any of the tip action. What would be involved?

There does seem to be much 9ft rods out there with enough back bone for tail besides a tiralejo which is R3000.

thx

Don't think it's possible to shorten without taking from the tip? Only other places to shorten would be the joint sections, which then wouldn't fit properly because of the taper change?  :dunno:
Only other place to shorten would be the butt section, but that would mean an entire revamp of the rod to get the reel seat repositioned? May be wrong, but that's the way I see it logically.

Agreed Tony,

The only way to do this is to shorten from the butt section of the rod, which means a revamp. Also, if you are going to use this for spinning from a boat, the possibilities are endless - you can lok at heavy spinning guides - thicker handles etc.

You can shorten the rod , but you will have to 'steal ' a bit on the tip and at the butt section . Be warned , not to take too much of the tip of , 8 to 12 cm MAX .when you have done this then you maybe have to look at respacing guides and reel seat , which in return is n big mission .
You could just go at it at the butt section , and move the reel seat forward . I have done this a a few rods , to to heavy to do , and beefed the rod up considerable .

Where are you fishing for Tail ?

Is it a spinning or Casting rod ?

unfortunately, shortening the rod will change it's characteristics drastically. unless the rod is all butt of course. you are taking ten percent off it's lenght. that is a lot.
Unless it is a rod which you dont mind throwing away, rather procure a rod which is designed to do what you want it to.
Chances are you could end up with no rod after much effort...

If you deside to shorten the rod, never ever cut the tip. By shortening from the bud you will loose the sensitive tip. It will be abit harder than now. What do you want in this rod? Casting wait? One or two piece?

CEO,can U bring your rod out my way,and will check your rod out as I've beefed up rods.

I'm in CT,like you,and bit difficult for UA experts to assess without checking scenario out.I have a Modus Operandi which I utilise to shorten rods and beef it up,and we can then deduce if thats way to go.

Will demonstrate, you can decide. But on a 12 ft rod,6inches/15cm is a whack of a diffs in my experience.A foot less will definitely impact, maybe negatively.Lets get feel of rod if you pop around out my way.
Cheers

Hi Walt,I think I know what Pieta meant, from experience I know that when too much is taken off the tip the rod will become very stiff...so in this case it's a little difficult as we're not talking 6 inches off a 14" rod but 1" off a 10" rod... :shk so the only thing that makes sense to me,is to take a little off the tip and the rest from the but as to not turn it into a broomstick.. :hehe: But that means that the reelseat needs to be reset and also the guides taken off and replaced(spaced)on the blank,in other words complete rod revamp. Now pro's and conns must be weighed up,concerning cost against buying a dedicated Y.tail rod compared to a revamp... :dunno: personally I'd look for a 'tail rod and keep the 10" for lighter spinning... :clwn

By cutting down from the tip you slow the tips action and as lofty mentioned it will be a hole new rebuild. You will be able to reuse the guides but it is not always possible to get the reel seat of in one piece. I have had my share in rodbuilding and is still doing now but on a lower scale as I use to. Just think that you need to explore some more. Get a few quotes on a total rebuild and then have a look around on what the rods are like in the market. If you tell me what you are looking for in a rod like casting waight and one or two piec I can maybee make a sejestion or two that will maybee cost you the same or a tad more than a rebuild.
