Casting distance
« on: November 22, 2016, 07:18:29 PM »
Hi guys.
Just borrowed a rod and real from a good friend uncle John Hayes. The rod is a 3pc with i think a saltega 50...or sumtin like that. Lets just say that i have never fixed a reel to a broom stick....this thing is going to need a massive fish on the other end to make it bend.
I met up with him at Jackson dam in Alberton so he can show me the basics.
To say that i was scared of that reel is an understatement. I can cast a baitcaster double handed as hard as i can so i knew that you dont give it a whip like with a spinning stick .
He fixed an 8oz sinker on the front and let me at it.
I did some soft casts just to get used to this heavy stick. After a while with more confidence i started putting some power down. I thought i was doing ok until uncle John told me to stop screwing around and gooi the thing. And not to worry about crows nests as that can be fixed....well ok....i trapped vas and gooied with a lot more vigor than the previous atempts and watched the weight soar over the far bank of the dam...no crows nest!!! Uncle Johns mouth was hanging open....again he said and again the weight thumped onto the grass...
Now the confidence was kreepin up and i knew there was still some power in reserve. So i lined up the next cast and moerd it as hard is i can....that thing was on its way to book my spot at splash rock when i heard the line on the real....instinctively my thumb whent down....a litlle to much if you asked my skin...moer of a crows nest and sinker off, a nice burn on my thumb. We called it a day and had a couple of beers.
He said that those casts were a good way past 100m. What i want to know is can i set the reel that i can actualy put the reserve power into the cast. And will i cast a 10oz futher than the 8oz.

Have a look at this board Standaman... http://www.ultimateangling.co.za/index.php?board=25.0

Lots of articles on casting a multiplier.

Static Mags on a multiplier also help with confidence and pushing a cast harder. Revolutionizes casting! http://www.ultimateangling.co.za/index.php?topic=17652.0

That static mag looks interesting...unfortunatly i wont be modifying a borrowed reel. Uncle John will have my head.
If i tighten the cast controll knob a tad will that affect the casting distance much considering that i can realy put the power down and load that broom stick.
Going to the primary school this afternoon to practice

Tightening the Cast Control knob slows the spool down, so yes it will give you more control. Fiddle with it until you're happy with the control.
When casting hard, it's critical not to jerk the rod. Jerking the tip will always cause an overwind. Practice will get you to the point where you're putting the shot with force, but keeping it smooth through the follow through.

The overwind i got when trying to cast as hard i can didnt happen emmidiatly. It happend about 50-80m out.
Maybe i was watching the weight and not the spool?
