NSRI
« on: May 24, 2013, 04:14:46 PM »
SilverTip Goes Flat. Ok so this report is runny a little  late as I promised is on Monday already, but rather late than never. I take  some of the people in my church every now and then, my little give back. So on  Saturday I Took Oom Gustav Keet, (70+ years old) he looks good for his age and  is still very active. Oom Gustav has been out on the sea with me, was with me  when I made the launch from Warner Doone Beach. Also been in the harbour with  me a couple of time, but this Saturday was going to be special. Oom Gustav  wants to catch a marlin, and will do anything to get his hands on one of them beauties.  This Saturday he was prepare to fish one, only problem was SilverTip wasn’t up  to his Standard, hint-hint. We got DSCB at 05:30 got the boat ready, and launch  a sec or so before 6 o’clock. Once in the water we waited a minute or two for  First light, and as usual before I went past South Pier, I had two lines  pulling in the wake. Just as I started turning for number one, one line went  down. Nice 2kg bonnie on the boat. Oom Gustav didn’t have his Marlin rig ready,  so I tossed the bonnie in to the sea. Was I in K@K. after explaining that I will  hook another one for him he calmed down and started getting his marlin rig  ready. Just as I started moving forward, the next line went tight. See I told  you I’ll get you another one, is your rig ready. I told Oom Gustav. Very sure  of myself… I played the bonnie softly to keep him strong and alive, and so that  Oom Gustav can get his rig ready. Eventually we got his bonnie out, close to  number 1 and we started trolling, because of the slow speeds, I rigged to  Rappies. After an hour of NOTHING I started heading toward Casions. When I got  there we got some livies and then drove a little deeper to look for some fish.  Oom Gustav got his next rig ready and hooked the bonnie again, which was now  dead. So there we sat, and the more I keep telling Oom Gustav that a Johnny is  going to come visit him the more he keep on telling me to mind my own rods. I missed  a bite or TWO on the livies but kept on going. Next moment, that big marlin rod  gave a short burst of a moan. Stop. AND THEN all of a sudden a nice fairly fast  long scream. Oom Gustav picks up, tightens the drag, and gives it a little  strike. For the next 15 min this fish goes away, then comes back, goes away and  then comes. I am standing on the centre console trying to get a number plate,  but such luck. Then Oom Gustav got tired and passed the rod to me. I thought it  was a Johnny, but with all the headshakes and the going and coming back, I didn’t  know so lekker. After another 15 min the hooks pulled. I looked at Oom Gustav. Speechless.  And I just looked at him again. Hys AF. Is all I could utter? I had bad dreams  that night from losing Oom Gustav’s Fish. Well let’s try again I said. But as I  tried starting the motor all I got was GHU, as in no Swing. I then got the rope  out to pull start the motor. No luck there. I then jumped on to the radio to  call for the three fishing vessels less than a kilometre away from us. Best part  of all CLS was there as well. But I guess they all had their radios off because  nobody replied. I then got the fog horn out, blowed on the thing till I was the  colour of the see. But no luck. Last resort. Row for help. But by know these  guys  were a km and a half away from us. But  we started rowing. All while trying to get Guppi to get FFF to get GregF to  call me, with the hopes that he is still on the water and can come and jump me.  But by the time he got the message, he was getting ready to beach at DSCB. Then  he told me, NSRI is leaving the bay and coming for me. I didn’t like that  sentence… next moment, here is the NSRI next to me. One of their gays tried the  pull start, but with no luck. Then we decided to tow SilverTip back to base. Well  a picture is worth a 1000 words, and here are those thousands of word in colour…  I do want to tell you gays this though. These People do this for Free, They don’t  get paid for spending time on the water, and In my case it was early in the day  with nice flat water and a sunny day. 1 out 60 calls are like that. The rest of  the time, there is the possible of death, water threatening to capsize them.  Cold, Wind and all the aliments that make their work for free very hard. If you  can, think of depositing a R100.00 once a month into their bank account. You never  know, they could come for you NEXT…

Glad all ended well.

Yup, they are an awesome organisation !

Even though I'm not an offshore guy, I've got a standing debit order with them.
They do a great job.
