Drakensberg trip
« on: December 19, 2011, 02:43:26 pm »
After all the excitement, the day finally arrived and the switch from sardines, chokka, prawn, sliding, sea sand, shad to flies, fly rod, spinners, drop shot, trout was eagerly waited.

Left Jhb on 2 December for our week stay at Champagne Sports Resort in the Central Bergs.Left quite late to avoid the local traffic chaos.
Got to CSR at around 2ish and was greeted with a hot and sunny day.mmmm i thought, not much trout to be caught if the weather stays like this.Checked in and for that afternoon all I wanted to do is sit and enjoy the scenery from the chalet. It was like a total relaxation and it the view was one of a post card.Sadly I did not see much that afternoon as within 15 minutes of relaxing,i relaxed too much and fell asleep on the grass in front of the chalet only to be woken up by something sniffing around me.I opened my eyes one at a time to see what it was and noticed this big fat dassie sniffing me.I had to change my underpants after that. :hehe: :hehe: :hehe: :hehe: :hehe: Much to the amusement of the family I was like a rat out of a hole dashing to the bathroom. After all the commotion,we settled down to a nice supper and early bed.
next morning we woke up to a cloudy day, cold and rain.mmm I thought, now that is what I came here for.........I could now smell the  :trout: .So I took a walk with the boys to the stream for a few throws but nothing.Came back and decided to take a drive around the area to check things out.I simply just love this part of the world.I would rather go there than go to Mpumalanga any day.We went up to Monks Cowl and to some of the local carpet places.Excellant place just to relax and the best part about this place is that there is no shopping malls :yipee: :yipee: :yipee: :yipee: :yipee:
The one day we were driving around when my son Ameer, who was sitting in the front noticed something crawling on the road and yelled out for me to stop.so in the rain I stop and he jumped out to go and see what it was.To his surprise he noticed that it was a crab which was trying to cross the road. Now the Grreny Beeny that he is,together with his brother made the rest of the traffic go onto the curb just so that he and his brother could move this crab into the bushes next to the stream. One bakkie stopped and asked me as to what the problem was who I think thought that I was stuck but then he noticed that I was driving a Toyota and I could never be stuck even at 520 000km :yipee: :yipee: :crzy :crzy .So I told him that my sons were trying to move a crab off the road and then he asked me as to where I was from etc etc etc. Then he asked me if I did fly fishing and told him that I was looking for a decent place to wet a line. So,he kindly gestured to me to follow him and he thne took us to a private estate where he told me that I could fish there for the rest of the week.Nobody is allowed there unless you are a resident. So I was qite chuffed to be invited to fish there. The dam was stocked with rainbow trout and all the fish caught were released. So we fished there the rest of the week.On one day we decided to fish the lake at Drakensberg Sun and on another day we fished the Bell Park Dam.these were the only other two days with heat and sun.
all in all,I got smashed by both my sons and yet again Ameer won the comp between the three of us hands down.he got 14 trout for the week,Taahir got 9 and I got 4.I must admit though,I was playing gilly for most of the time.but, hey, just spending time at the water's edge with the boys and seeing the joy on their faces when they hooked a fish made the whole trip worth it.
Sadly :-(  before you knew it,the week was over and we had to come back.

On the 12th I took the boys to a local pond and got some bass.this pond has some big kurpers and I tried on many times to catch it but could not.this day was to be my lucky day as I got one on a bass fluke.
