Title: Quintrex 400 Wide body modifications
Post by: L Hooker on October 05, 2018, 01:22:58 pm
Hi Chaps, have not been frequenting the forums much. Been a busy year.

Anyhow i wanted to purchase a small alu boat to use on inland waters, for the odd tiger fishing venure North and to use at Knysna where i often go. So I found and purchased a Quintrex Hornet  4m Wide Body a number of months back and have been busy putting in a new floor and changing it from a tiller arm to a centre console with electric start.

A wanted to make the console out of aluminium and it actually was harder than anticipated to actually source 5000 series aluminium (Boat is made from series 5251 ). I eventually sourced a large plate of 4mm 5754 alu (4mm) from Eurosteel, i managed to source the odds and ends required to convert the motor to electric start and bought a second hand cylinder and helm to put in hydraulic steering.

Here is the boat as i bought it with 40hp 3 cylinder tiller arm

First step was to do i mock layup of the console to check height and positioning

Once that was done i sourced some 48x48 alu square tube and welded up a new floor frame. My alu welding techniques took quite a bit of practise as i have not done it in years.

Next i started welding up the aluminium console. I found a place that did cnc cutting and drew up a cutting list and design with Sketchup for the console, then welded it up.

Next i bought some 18mm marine ply , made a few templates out of cardboard and then cut to fit. I opten to insert 3 x clear inspection hatches so i could clean the hull out when required as well as remove the floor boards to clean etc when required. The inspection hatches allow me to get to the stainless nuts on the underside of the floor. I made plastic washers and theses ensure the stainless nuts/botls dont come into contact with the alu. Dont want an chance of corrosion with dissimiliar metals contacting each other. i also fitted the helm .

I put in 2 x pvc pipes under the floor for the wiring. I'm currently getting the floor epoxied and sealed and getting the starter fitted and will update once complete. Sorry for the lack of detail however had a few minutes so thought id just share.

Looking good Sheldon. Any reason you went Aluminium? I know the Ozzies love their tinnies, but they are not that common around here.

Hi bud always liked the idea of an alu boat, due to light weight,  ease of repair if damaged and low maintenance if cleaned properly after salt water use. Finally suppose it was just an itch i had to scratch lol  :-)

Forgot to mention also did not want to have to bother with buying a 2nd hand fibre boat and have issues with buoyancy etc etc etc, redoing deck , foam and so on.

Looking pretty good mate. Have to admit to never having even thought about owning a tinny...But I've more than once considered building a wooden boat just so I could start and finish exactly the way I wanted, with everything customised to my wants. Maybe I will one day... In my golden years.  :toppie:

Currently i have a 12G prop on the 40hp , full open taps with 3 on board she runs at around 46km/hr, she runs well however i think revs sound a bit low (Dont have a rev counter) so might need to prop her down a bit? Other than that very chuffed with the little boat, she can pull a tube and is very easy to launch retrieve.

Just a question does the alu not get scalding hot in summer?

Thanks for the feedback chaps. Half Pint no surprisingly it does not get hot at all, when its on the water the water i suppose keeps it cool.

True... Now that I think about it... Aluminium is an incredible conductor of heat.
