This tutorial is designed to assist anglers in giving their reels a thorough service. In this Tutorial, the entire reel is comprehensively stripped and taken apart.
The Tutorial consists of over 140 High res photographs, that if you follow step by step, can save you some boodle and increase your knowledge and understanding behind the technology!
Certain parts of this Tutorial are not absolutely necessary to do every service - where this is the case, notes are made. Enjoy!
Disclaimer: You undertake to open your reel up entirely at your own risk. Ultimate Angling accepts NO RESPONSIBILITY for breakages or losses caused by DIY service.

Dismantle the Drag Knob
This is not absolutely necessary as part of a routine service, but it is included here for a Comprehensive one.
(http://www.ultimateangling.co.za/articles/sustain/upgrades/drag knob 1.jpg)
Inside the Drag Knob... interesting that the little grey plastic surface is the part that causes all the friction for the Drag to work.
(http://www.ultimateangling.co.za/articles/sustain/upgrades/drag knob 2.jpg)
Remove the rubber seal...
(http://www.ultimateangling.co.za/articles/sustain/upgrades/drag knob 3.jpg)
This is the piece that determines how good and consistent the Drag will be over time... the Drag Spring.
(http://www.ultimateangling.co.za/articles/sustain/upgrades/drag knob 4.jpg)
The Drag Knob disassembled fully. Clean all parts, regrease and re-assemble.
(http://www.ultimateangling.co.za/articles/sustain/upgrades/drag knob 5.jpg)
I would recommend servicing one section completely at a time. In other words, finish re-assembling the Drag Knob before continuing with the rest of the reel. You will end up with too many parts and not remembering where they go. Put it back together while it's still fresh in your mind!
Let's continue...

A drop of oil can be placed on the metal weights in the centre of the Anti-reverse bearing. DO NOT put grease here... it will stop the bearing working.

To service the Drag system....
Inspect them, clean, re-oil lightly with a good oil like Shimano lube and re-assemble.
Don't use grease on these felt washers, they were meant to be oiled...
That should keep your reel as smooth as new for the next few sessions!
Now for the LINE ROLLER - A spot on most reels that is most often sadly neglected.
The parts that make up the Line Roller...
To re-assemble, slide the bearing into the Grey Bushing from the lipped side. Then slide the Bushing into the Line roller from the thick side.
NB:
The Thicker side of the Bushing and the Line Roller both face the Screw side of the assembly.
Before assembling this system, lube all the parts with a good Oil.
THE OSCILLATING SLIDER
(http://www.ultimateangling.co.za/articles/sustain/sustain%2044.jpg)
THE BAIL ARM MECHANISM
This part is VERY tricky to re-assemble. If you are uncertain, rather leave this part out.
Now you can unscrew the top screw...
Be careful that you don't lose the CLICK PIN AND SPRING WHEN OPENING!!
Now you can thoroughly clean the Rotor of any beachsand and dirt. Scrub all parts with Benzine, and regrease lightly.
This next step is extremely tricky and will take some time trying to align the different parts!
HANDLE SERVICE
The STRADIC has a serviceable handle.
To remove the Knob, slip a thin bladed screwdriver between the SHIMANO badge and the knob, and lift it out. Once removed, you can access the screws for the rest of the Handle Assembly.

Hope this helps!

As always :win:
Amazing Tut Tony.
Almost makes me want to try and do it, but then you will get a call for help and a partially assemble Stradic to sort out.
Thanks for the effort.

It really isn't that difficult Hardus! Really. The only way to learn is to try it. And we're always here to help if you make a swr

Reefman, What brilliant timing for this pictorial (clap) . As luck would have it, my Symetre 2500 went for a swim in the surf this afternoon and the movement is feeling rough probably due to all the sand in the Anti Reverse housing . I did give it a proper rinse with fresh water immediately after and again when I got home after the session, but I figured Im going to have to take it apart to get all the gritty bits out.
Can I use standard grease for everything or will I need to get a proper Lube once re-assembling the Pinion?
The reels look the same to me so your photographic layout will serve me well. :+ cred:
-
Yet another top class post Tony! (clap)
-
Shot Mahi, any of the standard greases will do the trick. Kingfisher make a good one - Red stuff. But Daiwa grease/Surecatch any of that sort of stuff will do the job.
-
I was thinking Caltex.... :clwn . I have a tub of the stuff from an old project so thought I could use it :hehe: .Thanks for the clarity though, will get some of the real deal.

Nah think the Auto greases are way too thick. The fishing ones are low viscosity.

Awesome post as usual Tony and on a great little piece of kit as well I have two of the older ones and love em to bits.
Can I be a pest and ask you to also post your tuts in PDF for download?

Reefman - Thank you for all the awesome tutorials, these are really easy to follow and very informative.
I pretty much always service my own reels and am presently using two Stradic 5000Fj models for shore spinning.
I have never quite gotten my head around the best way these reels should be lubed / greased considering these are used continuously for about 2 hours 4 times a week. That a lot of casting and retrieving. I have used the Kingfisher red grease, various grades of Rocket Fuel Liquid Grease and combinations of all three and some other that I cannot remember the names of but have not found any really suitable combinations.
I contacted Rapala VMC ( Shimano agent is SA) to purchase some reel oil and the original manufacturers grease. I was forwarded grease that is green in colour and works pretty well on gears together with oil in Shimano embossed bottle - the same you used to get in box with new reel.
I now grease gears (pinion, drive and idle gears) with green Shimano grease taking care not to get grease on the main shaft and then oil all other components worm gear, bearings etc with Shimano oil. This seems to work pretty well and I then re oil main shaft from the top after removing the line spool and also add oil through maintenance port after every 4 outings (8 hours of spinning) or so. This keeps the reels running pretty smoothly.
I was wondering if you know of any really good quality grease / lubricants that can be applied to bearings shafts and gears that will not detract from the smoothness and ease of retrieve with these reels. From experience I know that over greasing makes the real harder to turn especially if you get grease on the main shaft that sits inside the pinion gear.
Any assistance will be much appreciated.
-
If you use a low viscosity grease, (soft, not thick and sticky) it shouldn't affect the functioning at all, even if you do get it on the Shaft.
Remember that when you start using the reel, the grease is unheated and might seem slightly stiffer, but as soon as you've reeled a few times, the heat generated will make the grease more flowable and the reel will become smoother...
I generally use Cal's grease for bearings, drags and general use. I bought a huge tub from Jagged edge - it should last me forever! But I still like the Kingfisher/Surecatch red grease.
Oils: Reel-X oil. Quantum Hot sauce. The Shimano oil is fine.

For those interested in pimping their Stradics or Sustains... check out Project White Stella (http://www.ultimateangling.co.za/index.php?topic=14254.0)
-
Thanks for advise Reefman - much appreciated.
Read the White Stella link - very interesting.
Slightly off topic (possible new topic should be started) will be interested to hear from anyone using the new Stellas especially the 5000. I am interested to hear how waterproof these reels are. Can you have a wave break over or on you and not have to strip the entire reel and then re-lube and oil? The new Stradic and Sustain are not really that waterproof and the Roller Clutch and Shaft bearings take a beating even from being splashed and having waves break on you.
Have read a couple of reviews on new Stellas and all comments on reels are pretty positive.
-
Reef's can this service tutorial be utilised for the FJ8000 series?

The Stradic is not very waterproof at all - there are no seals under the Rotor or on the handle, so for safety sake, I strip mine after every trip. In the meantime, make sure your bearings are greased full up.
The Stella's? Ya still the best of the best, but you could probably buy 5 or 6 Stradics for one Stella... :cnfzd so should flippin' hope they are waterproof!!
Reef's can this service tutorial be utilised for the FJ8000 series?
The reels are very similar Psy. Some minor differences.
-
Apologies for going off topic...
Reefman, please can you do a tutorial on the Oceano 4500J?
Thanks
-
Sure send me 1 and I'll do it no sweat.
-
Awesome! just what i need!
I don't have any grease... What about Q20? :dunno:
-

Q20 is oil, not good enough for lasting protection of Spinning reel bearings and seals. Grease is a must.

I use my Stradic on the boat and shore and it takes a hammering, I only rinse it off after each trip but send it in for a service every 3 months or so, costs me R80 bargain. PS, just myself a new one
-
So I have taken apart most of it, but there is still something in there, its not smooth smooth as it was when it was brand new last week, almost like there is a grain of sand somewhere right inside. Will have to take it all apart tonight once I have picked up my grease.
Lets hope I can put it all back together again! :tkx:
-
Good luck Roachy! Any problems, give us a shout.
-
Excellent tut thanks for sharing :+ cred:
-
I have got to the end of a standard service. But when I twist the golden thing that looks like a spiral noodle - still got that light grinding happening. Quite bleak because the reel is brand new only used once!
Grease is not helping. will have to try scrubbing with benzine. Where can i buy benzine?
Oh, and that little nut in the tutorial where it says "don't lose this nut" - never even saw it!
-
ThE Spiral golden noodle is the Pinion gear. It turns against bearings... which will be the cause of the grinding... I think your pinion gear bearings are shot. Have you tried opening them up and cleaning them out?
-
I have not tried that yet... haha I have spent 2 evenings now fiddling with this thing!
I was hoping to not go that far into the tutorial considering the reel is still so new - but it appears I have no other choice.
Will try get some benzine today, take it apart fully and scrub.
I have taken it apart and put it together now twice so I at least know the standard service routine pretty well!
I am starting to doubt my wisdom in purchasing this reel!
-
I am starting to doubt my wisdom in purchasing this reel!
No no... don't be silly. It's a great reel, very good value. Just not waterproof - there are very few reels in the world that are.
All reels in this class just need regular maintenance and they will last you many, many hours of fishing pleasure.

agree Reefman
-
I have done everything I can now... stripped it down completely, scrubbed the parts, re-greased and put back together... still not smooth like it should be. Don't know which part is the guilty one. I guess I should just leave this to the professionals and take it to someone.
-
Roachy have you taken the bearing shields off?
-
I am not sure...

If you're not sure, then you haven't!
Keep telling you bud, it's your bearings!!

yoh quite a process this reel maintenance is!
Will open up that bearing and see what's happening.
-
Don't worry Roachy it gets easier every time! Most of us have ended up with a checkers bag full of spare parts on our first attempt so you are doing pretty well

Agree!
-
I must say I have got this process down now... can open up and put together quite quicky from memory... if I can actually just sort out this problem with the bearing I may never have to take my reels to anyone else ever again!
Ya, actually there are one or two really small washers spare at the moment, will check the diagram that came with the reel to see where they go, and to be honest there is a little nut in the tutorial which I never even saw when taking the reel apart!
I wanna go fishing this weekend so I am running out of time here! w;k

That's the whole point of these tutorials Roachy. Soon you'll be able to diagnose your own problems and fix them!
PS: There are several bearings in the reel... you need to open these ones and clean and lube them with grease. Once done, you should have several trips without having to open it again.
The Pinion gear bearings x2
RHS Plate and LHS Plate bearings x2
4 bearings in all.
The bearing in the Line roller shouldn't need a service at this stage.

For Sure! But Roachy has only used his reel on one trip, so it should still be fine. Besides, he had so much kuk trying to do a minor service, I don't want to be responsible for him opening up the line roller!! :hyst: HKGK. (Just kidding Roachy! You're doing a fine job!)

Hi Reefman
Can u maybe help me please - I've stripped and cleaned my Stradic 2500 FJ and when busy assembling I found this plastic washer / shim left behind (7 mm outer & 6mm inner diameter). Here's a pic of the washer and maybe u can help me with the location of this.
Tried the diagram but it isn't on there.
Please help me!

Reefman also after assembling the reel it isn't that smooth any more - the bearings was cleaned and lubed and double checked for smoothness.
Also found that when turning the handle the handle also comes at a point where the gears almost got stuck and then after that it turns normal again.
Everything got put back the way it come out accept now for that washer!
-
Did you open up the Line roller mechanism? That Shim looks like the Line Roller spacer?? :dunno:

With smoothness or grating of the reel, you need to play around with seating the gears. Sometimes the Drive gear is not fully engaged into the side plate bearing, resulting in the roughness. You should test the reel for smoothness before screwing the side plate back on.

I've got a problem with my Stradic5000FJ - I've owned x3 of them, and on x2 of them, the Right hand side plate screw (unmarked screw in photo), have FALLEN OUT whilst spinning (factory obviously does not tighten them well), and on my latest one, the thread where this screw goes into the left side plate is stripped completely. Subsequently, when you reel under a little bit of pressure, the 2 sideplates have some movement, trying to "pull apart"!! I've now put locktite into the left hand slot where the screw should tighten into, and it FEELS better, but I'll only be able to tell once fishing.
My question though... can one create a NEW, bigger thread on the LH side plate, and use a NEW, Bigger screw on the RH side plate?
-
@ kwagga maybe take the reel to jono, he will be able to etell you where that washerkie comes from .
No problems with mine "
Poenie I would not force a skew with a bigger head in there .
Call me a hillbilly ' but I would just keep the old screw in their with locktite , and fill up the hole with silicon . Lol
-
That would make servicing a bit of a **** though... and I service quite regularly!

Yeah , or justask jonos opinion , bet he will have a plan .

Hi Reefman is defnitley not that roller washer / shim - all of that is in place.
I'm really struggling now with the smoothness of the reel.
I've put everything back like it was taken out - except for that washer - and when turning the pinion gear by hand it comes at a stage where it catches on something and then it goes again - even gets worse when the sideplate screws are tighten on it.
Then I removed the one washer on the main gear (there are 2) that sits against the bearing and then it run smooth - there were 2 washers so its correct that way.
But now the smoothness is gone again - it's like really ruff.
Checked the main gear and pinion gear again - NO ruffness on there or damaged whatsoever.
I can take it to Jonathan Lenny but he didn't take it apart so now it's difficult for him to maybe get the problem.
Really fed up with this reel - I've spend more time on that reel - opening, stripping fitting etc that I spend last year on the fishing waters :dunno: (bat
I know it's difficult to explain to someone when the reel isn't in your hand but anyway maybe there's some light in the tunnel. :clwn

@ kwagga , it's like doing the walk of shame taking the reel to him in a bag full of parts , lol .
I bet it's just something you have got turned upside down , or wrong side up .
Good luck

I meant to reply to above post awhile back. I checked a Stradic 500FJ that I had not opened (nor had serviced) and also found the Right hand side plate screw (unmarked screw in photo) was mostly unscrewed. I had not noticed any effect whilst spinning but am curious whether any other anglers have also had this experience. I tightened the screw after service and checked after using a few times and screw was still secure. Possibly screw not properly inserted at factory?
-
It would seem that way!! I'm still after a solution though as the thread has stripped and locktite does not seem to be the answer!

Thanks for the tutorial, Reefman. It made things a lot easier, not having to try to figure it all out myself.
But, nevertheless, after putting it together again, I ended up with a spare part![size=78%]
Have you any idea where this belongs?
Also, can you recommend a good reel grease?
Thanks for the valuable work you did!
Best regards

It's the Drag clicker... fits inside the Drag Knob into the Drag clicker spring. Will take some photo's to show you.
Best reel grease at the moment is Corrosion Block grease, you can order it online along with the Corrosion Block spray. Excellent stuff!

Here we go...

Thank you so much … I didn't expect to get a response so soon, and in such detail, with pics!
I really appreciate it.
Thanks and best regards

No problem. You're welcome!

Thanks for pointing me to Corrosion Block grease and spray. I ordered some (along with Reelfast, their light oil) and it looks and feels great (and their service is excellent, even for small orders like these). I opened up my reel again to remove the old grease and replace with the new. And now, of course, I lost a part: the tiny spacer (RD2409) that goes in front of the worm gear bush. The reel seems to work fine without it, but I'm sure it's there for a reason, and I'd prefer to put one back in. Not many dealers seem to stock Shimono parts. Have you any idea who who might be able to supply this?

Rapala VMC are the agents. If anyone will have the part, they will.

Phone them. They're not too good at answering e-mails.

Thanks Reefman. I've emailed them.

Oops, after emailing them I notice your comment about them not being so good at answering … will phone them instead.

If you don't come right, check out this thread... post #9. Pimping a Stradic. I used a piece of plastic/teflon and cut a spacer washer out. Still going fine 3 years later!

I phoned Rapala VMC and they were very helpful. And, yes, they've got the part (as well as a few bits & pieces I want for other reels) and will ship it to me.
(Wow! that post on pinping the reel is something else.)
